Georgia Stanway opens England’s Women’s World Cup account with a penalty…but only after it is RETAINED after Haiti’s 5-foot goalkeeper Kerly Theus saved her initial effort but was off her line
Georgia Stanway scored England’s first goal at this year’s Women’s World Cup after her penalty gave Sarina Wiegman’s side the lead in Brisbane.
The Bayern Munich midfielder scored a brilliant penalty on the second attempt after being forced to retake the penalty. Stanway’s goal ended England’s two-match drought without scoring.
Stanway saw her first try saved by Kerly Theus, but the Haiti goalkeeper was off her line in making the save.
The incident came midway through the first half after a corner was drifted to Lucy Bronze at the back post.
Replays showed the ball tapped Haitian midfielder Batcheba Louis’s raised hand.

The penalty was later awarded by VAR, with Stanway being tasked with scoring England’s first goal of the tournament.
However, her penalty kick was saved by the 5’4 keeper. The celebration in Haiti was cut short after the referee ordered the penalty retaken.
The replay showed that Theus was off her line, so the penalty kick had to be retaken.
Stanway got back on and scored to put the Lionesses ahead midway through the first half.
There was much drama in the first half as England were denied a penalty early in the game. Chloe Kelly appeared to have committed a foul in the penalty area, but the VAR ruled a foul had been committed before the Manchester City striker went down in the penalty area.
Alessia Russo appeared to interfere with a Haitian defender in the penalty area. Haiti eventually got a free kick, but the referee still booked Dayana Pierre-Louis after a foul on Kelly.
England were denied a penalty early on as Chloe Kelly fouled inside the box, but Alessia Russo appeared to foul a Haiti defender in the run-up.
