Georgia prospect Nolan Smith sets the NFL combine on fire by posting an impressive 4.39 40-yard time… second-fastest time by a running back since 2003

Former University of Georgia running back Nolan Smith turned heads with an insanely fast time at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

The defensive lineman put in an amazing performance, recording an official 40-yard time of 4.39 seconds.

Smith’s unofficial time was clocked at 4:44, before officials reviewed the tape and corrected it to 0.05 seconds faster. He tied Auburn linebacker Owen Pappoe for the fastest time Thursday.

Smith’s Bulldogs teammates watched in Athens, celebrating their teammate turning the second fastest time of 40 for a running back since 2003.

That record belongs to Carolina Panthers winger Amare Barno, who posted a time of 4.36 at last year’s combine.

NFL Network analysis showed Smith’s time was faster than veteran NFL running backs Christian McCaffrey and Saquon Barkley, as well as receivers Stefon Diggs and DeAndre Hopkins.

But it wasn’t sprinting that Smith was the best at, as the 2021 and 2022 national champion achieved the highest vertical jump on day one.

He reached a height of 41.5 inches, surpassing everyone else who worked out Thursday.

Smith became the heaviest player in Combine history to have a sub-4.40 backboard time and a vertical over 40 inches.

Last season for the Bulldogs, Smith surrendered 14 solo tackles and three sacks after playing just eight games this season before injury ended his season.

Smith’s time was surpassed Friday, when the defensive backs had their turn to test their skills. Michigan DB DJ Turner ran the fourth fastest 40 time at the combine since 2003 in all positions when he ran an official time of 4.26.
