George Hassett: Farmer’s heartbreaking last words to his fiancee before horror truck crash leaves him brain dead

  • The couple would get married in November

The heartbroken fiancé of a farmer who was left brain dead after a horrific crash has revealed that the last thing he said to her was “I love you.”

George Hassett, 30, was a passenger in a car that collided with a lorry on the Hume Highway near Tarcutta, NSW, in fog on Friday.

Aly, his four-year-old partner and mother of their one-year-old twins Oliver and Cooper, spoke to Mr. Hassett just before he left for his trip.

It was a short conversation where he asked her to tie off the horses, but more importantly, they then expressed their love for each other.

“George was airlifted to Canberra Hospital in critical condition, sustaining multiple injuries that even the strongest young man we know was ultimately unable to overcome,” family friend Meg Dean wrote on a GoFundMe fundraiser for Aly and her boys.

Mr. Hassett has always wanted to donate his organs, Aly said, and several potential recipients are about to be tested to see if they’re a match.

“He just has a huge personality, he’s so nice and understanding,” she told the Daily telegram. “He’s just the best person you could ask for.”

The pair were due to wed in the Southern Highlands in November and Aly still intends to legally change her name to her beloved fiancée’s name.

She said that she and Mr. Hassett were very similar, loved horseback riding and country life.

In addition to her own grief, Aly must also take care of her twins, who will grow up without their father, although they are still too young to understand.

“They came to the hospital and recognized him before touching his hand and saying goodbye,” she said.

Mrs. Dean said that ‘George always looked after others.

“We are asking people to please dig deep so we can help Aly and the boys through this horrible time, with overheads while Aly can’t work as she will be taking care of her two little ones without George.”

By Tuesday night, the fundraiser had already raised about $110,000 for the family.

One co-worker wrote that she had “worked with Aly many years ago.” I am really devastated for her and her beautiful boys.

Sending love and healing vibes during this time.

Another wrote that it was an “absolute tragedy.” Such a damn good man taken too soon.

“My condolences go out to his entire family and I will be thinking of you at this time.”
