Google continues to power the Gemini Live AI assistant on Android phones with the ability to make calls and send messages on the go, even when your phone is locked. If discovers in a piece of unreleased code from Android Authority, the update would further cement Gemini as Google Assistant’s replacement.
Controlling the phone while it is locked is a signature feature of Gemini Live. You could already talk to the AI and ask questions when your phone is locked, but currently only Google Assistant can send messages or make calls without unlocking the device. The unreleased code indicates that Gemini will also get that option.
According to the images in the code, Gemini’s settings will have a toggle that will allow Gemini to send messages or make calls from locked devices. When activated, you can ask the AI to text or call people before unlocking the phone, but if you want to see a response with personal information, you’ll need to unlock the phone as a security measure. The appeal for users to let Gemini communicate from locked devices is that it allows hands-free operation, which is ideal when you’re driving or otherwise busy.
New look, more Gemini
The code under development also heralds changes to the appearance of Gemini, simplifying the interface in some respects. For example, the floating text box expands vertically so you can see all the text, and Gemini extensions are grouped by category so you can find them more easily. There are also fewer example assignments for the categories, only one instead of three.
The upgrades in the upcoming code aren’t earth-shattering, but they point to how Google is making progress with its AI strategy, especially when it comes to making Android the hub for Gemini’s features. As competition with Apple and the rollout of Apple Intelligence increase, Google will at least experiment with anything that boosts Gemini’s position on mobile devices, large or small.
