Gemini AI might be ready to roll the dice
If you’re old enough to remember the mysteries of the Internet in the late 1990s, you might remember the fun “I’m Feeling Lucky” button for Google’s search engine, which takes you straight to the first result of a search instead of to the usual list. Three decades and a million sponsored links later, Google wants to expand its Gemini AI assistant with a similar feature discovers in unreleased code from Android Authority. This time the button will be a way to produce a random prompt.
Let fate decide what to discuss with Gemini. Do you need a reminder to hand in your dry cleaning? How about coming up with gift ideas for the holidays? All this and more will be presented to Gemini in an unpredictable way when you click the I’m Making a Gamble button. The button is not just below the text box. Every time you start a conversation, Gemini will offer some other random suggestions, with the lucky button as a permanent value next to it. Gemini actually had random idea suggestions on the homepage when it first debuted, but Google removed them a while ago to streamline the app’s appearance. The new look is minimalist, but still offers random ideas.
It’s not much different from the conversation topic suggestions you see when opening an AI chatbot like ChatGPT or Perplexity. The difference is that you don’t know what you’ll get when you click on it. The button also has a certain nostalgic appeal thanks to its distinguished pedigree in search engine history.
Happy Gemini
Random prompts and the lucky button are about more than rosy memories of trusting that the first search result was what you wanted. Like the earlier version, the button and its random prompts help demonstrate what Gemini can do. Google wants people to use Gemini for everything. That’s a hard sell if people don’t know the useful or just plain fun ways to use the AI chatbot.
By reintroducing suggestions and giving them a spin with the lucky button, Google can educate users about Gemini and AI as a whole. It may be small scale and somewhat piecemeal, but it can lead to many loyal customers or positive word of mouth around Gemini.
Playing with random clues could lead to users being exposed to a host of other upcoming Gemini features and capabilities that will be referenced in future code. Google is planning a lot of upgrades for Gemini, from processing large amounts of code to better memory for what you like, and even a role as a tour guide in your car.
