Geelong star Jeremy Cameron will leave game against Collingwood if his girlfriend goes into labour

Geelong superstar Jeremy Cameron will walk out of the Cats’ grand season opener against Collingwood on HALFTIME if his girlfriend goes into labor with their first child.

Geelong’s star forward Jeremy Cameron will consider abandoning Friday night’s blockbuster against Collingwood at half time if he receives word that his partner is in labor.

Cameron’s partner, Indiana Putra, will give birth to the couple’s first child between rounds one and two.

If the delivery ends up coinciding with Friday’s game, then Cameron won’t play.

At this stage, the odds of Cameron playing look good, given that the deadline is after the game.

But the 29-year-old will be faced with an interesting decision if he stands in line and then receives the news that his partner has gone into labor.

“I have been quite clear with the club and we have talked a lot about whether the [labour] happens [before the match] then I won’t be able to play,’ Cameron told reporters on Tuesday.

‘But I’m happy to go to the game [if that’s not the case].

“Right now it’s completely normal and it’s just a waiting game. That’s the tricky thing: you never know when it’s coming.

“If the call comes at halftime, it will be a decision that has to be made at that time.”

If Cameron fails, then the Cats could end up without their two powerful premiership forwards given the continuing doubts surrounding Tom Hawkins.

The 34-year-old was sidelined during preseason after undergoing foot surgery and is no guarantee to face the Magpies.

“Tom is training very well and hopefully we’ll both be there,” Cameron said.

But if we’re not, I’m sure that [the coaches] I’ve looked at it a couple of times throughout the week.

“We have a lot of guys who can play different roles, and I think we’re very lucky with that.

“We have some backmen that can move up, we have new guys coming in, and we have guys that fill different roles.

“Hopefully it doesn’t play out that way, but if it does, it’s going to be a bit of a different line of the future.”

If either Hawkins or Cameron fail, it could pave the way for former Magpie Ollie Henry to play a key role up front.

Henry scored 21 goals for Collingwood last season, and the 20-year-old will be looking to get off to a bright start to his new life at the Cats.

“The thing that really stood out to me is his aerial work,” Cameron said.

“He’s like a middle class player, but he plays very tall. He loves to jump on the ball and is not afraid in the air, which is different.
