GB Women’s basketball match vs Germany is abandoned due to medical emergency in the crowd – as ‘supporter runs onto the court’

The basketball match between Great Britain and Germany at the Copper Box Arena in Manchester was called off on Sunday after a spectator in the crowd became unwell during the match.

The incident occurred in the third period, with both sides deciding to call the game.

According to The suna spectator had ‘run onto the pitch’ and walked to the German bench to alert the players and medical teams that a fan in the stands had become unwell.

Medical professionals then made their way through the crowd and lifted sheets around the sick fan as they provided medical aid.

According to the news agency, the fan was treated for about six minutes before being taken away on a stretcher.

When the game was canceled, Germany was leading 54-43.

A statement from the British Basketball Association said: ‘During the match Great Britain Women v Germany (21 July) a medical incident occurred involving a member of the public following which the decision was made to abandon the match.

‘The British Basketball Federation would like to thank both Great Britain and Germany for a fantastic display of sport, and the fans for their support and understanding under the circumstances.

“We would also like to commend the professionalism and responsiveness of the venue, the medical teams and the security teams.”

The British women’s team have failed to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, while Germany will face the United States before taking on Belgium, Japan and the United States again at the Olympics.

German winger Satou Sabally told The Sun: ‘I wish both families all the best.
