A 15-year-old boy has been airlifted to hospital after a gas cylinder exploded in his face in South Australia.

Upon arrival, the adolescent was treated for minor external burns.

The incident prompted warnings from the Metropolitan Fire Service, who told 9 News that gas cylinder explosions are more common during the summer.

Phillip Evens of the Adelaide MFS told 9News the boy’s injuries could have been ‘so much worse’.

“Even if it’s just a leak, it’s still a very dangerous situation for anyone who’s around,” Evens said.

‘In the summer, the MFS sees an increase in gas cylinder incidents, and there’s no better time to check if yours is working than now.’

He said that all domestic gas cylinders have date stamps, which confirm that they are valid for ten years.
