They cheered: ‘All these years you thought Smithy would get a new car. I can’t wait, I’m looking forward to this more than Christmas itself’.

“THE QUESTION WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR FOR YEARS IS NOW BEING ANSWERED; I’M SO EXCITED! If he doesn’t marry Nessa, I’m running away!”

‘Never mind the fishing trip, never mind the wedding, let’s just have the best Christmas special ever!! Forget Oasis, THIS IS HISTORY; this means we need to rewatch the show.’

This comes after co-star Rob Brydon suggested filming for the show was taking place when he shared a selfie with co-star Ruth Jones on Saturday.

The 59-year-old actor, who plays popular uncle Bryn, beamed alongside Nessa Jenkins star Ruth, 57, and teased: “Something’s happening… #gavinandstacey.”

Gavin & Stacey co-creators James and Ruth confirmed the series would return in May, filming on Barry Island, after the final Christmas special aired in 2019.

Fans can find out what happened during the five-year hiatus this year during the Christmas break, after the previous episode became the most-watched non-sporting event in a decade.

At the climax of the episode, Nessa knelt down to propose to Smithy, but viewers never got to hear his reaction.

Rob previously said he was “moved to tears” when he saw the script and said the episode would be very “emotional.”

Speaking live to Chris Evans from Laverstoke Park Farm, Rob said of the final episode: ‘At first we knew it was going to happen but we were told to keep it a secret.

“So you have to lie to people! It’s a horrible feeling because you don’t want to lie to someone’s face.”

He continued, “It took a couple of months for the cast to see the script. I just saw it, we were on vacation, we were away, about a month ago. I read it. Oh, it’s so good.”

When Chris asked Rob if he said that because he had to, Rob replied, “No, actually I wouldn’t. I don’t want to tempt fate, but I think it’s fantastic.”

He revealed: ‘You know what? I was moved to tears, because it’s emotional.’

In July, James gave a major update on Gavin & Stacey when he appeared on Capital Breakfast radio, revealing that the final script was almost ready.

Host Jordan North asked him, “Is everything written down, is everything recorded? Is there anything left to write about?”

James replied, “It’s written well, but now we’re rewriting it. So we have to, we have to take some time away, we have to change some bits.

‘We did that, it’s quite tricky because Ruth Jones (Nessa) is in Sister Act in the West End at the moment and I’m doing The Constituent at the Old Vic.

‘So, we’ve done quite a bit of writing in dressing rooms and stuff like that, and then we both look at each other, pretty tired from the plays, but tomorrow we’re going to do it again.

‘Back to work on Friday. I hope Friday… that it’s done and finished this Friday!’

Then Jordan said, ‘This Friday? Is that the deadline?’

James then joked, “Well, it’s the deadline we’ve set ourselves, because we’re starting filming pretty soon now. It’s not too far away.”
