The debate was branded the “Great Red State vs. Blue State Debate,” but Newsom told Maher on Friday that he is not interested in a continued battle against Republicans but felt he had to call out DeSantis for his liberal bashing because no other Democrat was doing so. It.
‘We’ve been through so much. We are polarized and traumatized. It’s been a tough five or six years,” Newsom told Maher.

Newsom described America’s backsliding on voting rights, LGBT rights and women’s rights
“That said, I’m not going to sit back and watch,” he said. “There are people who are trying to take us back to the world before the 1960s.”
Newsom went on to describe America’s backsliding on voting rights, LGBT rights and women’s rights.
“You can sit there and say, ‘I really want to get along,’ while these guys turn back the clock, or you can stand up straight and stand up for yourself.”
“The reason I started going to those red states,” Newsom said, “the reason I started taking on DeSantis and the reason I started running ads in these red states is because I felt like my party did not do enough.’
“I just thought there was a little bit of embarrassment in our party,” the California governor said. “I thought we should discuss this kind of thing.”
Newsom then called out the Republican Party for capitalizing on cancel culture with their response to Disney, Target and Bud Light — referencing Dylan Mulvaney’s infamous “woke” scandal following the beer company’s flop campaign with the trans activist.
The Democrat declared that it is time to denounce the “cultural cleansing” underway — including the banning of 3,362 books last year.

“I say all that with love in my heart,” Newsom joked as he wrapped up his rant, assuring Maher that he doesn’t want to talk down to people — and emphasizing that everyone deserves to be “respected, connected and protected.”
Maher teased Newsom about a possible race for president, but Newsom offered no insight into any future plans to take the top job.
