Gavin Newsom shoots down ‘farcical’ idea that he could replace Joe Biden on the 2024 Democrat ticket saying it’s ‘distressing’ to even discuss

Gavin Newsom has dismissed speculation that he could replace Joe Biden on the 2024 Democratic presidential ticket as “ridiculous,” calling it “really painful” to have to consider such speculation.

The California governor made the comments to DailyMail.com while strolling the red carpet of CNN’s spin room ahead of the presidential debate in Atlanta between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

The governor, who many believe will run for president in the future, began by touting Biden’s achievements and criticizing Trump.

When pressed specifically by DailyMail.com on whether he would be willing to step in for Biden if the 81-year-old president bowed out of this year’s election, Newsom shot it down.

“It’s a non sequitur. I don’t even understand the context of that,” he replied.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said the idea he would replace Joe Biden as the Democrats’ frontrunner is ‘a farce’ and that Biden is his man

“This is a president of the United States running for re-election. He’s our guy. And that’s part of the right’s diversionary tactic — to keep muddying the waters with all this nonsensical speculation,” he said.

“It’s like the absurdity of who gets a shot. I mean, this is ridiculous. This is serious stuff — democracy, freedom, rights,” the California Democrat continued.

He said it was “really heartbreaking” for him to have to discuss the idea of replacing the 81-year-old president, already the oldest in American history.

“And to see it downplayed, when we’re downplaying it, even having all these conversations, is really troubling to me as an American citizen, and not just as a Democrat.”

And it is nowhere as important as avoiding another Trump presidency, he added.

Newsom claimed that Biden has “done a remarkable job in three and a half years,” noting that he has created “eight times more jobs than the last three Republican administrations combined.”

“We’re going to talk about an economy that has gotten back on track, inflation that has been tamed,” the California Democrat said rosy. “We’re going to talk about a vision for the future.”

Trump and Biden will face off in the first 2024 presidential debate on Thursday at 9 p.m.

And then he went back to praising the president.

“We’re going to talk about American industrial policy and American industry, and the bipartisan achievements of this administration.”

“And we’re going to compare and contrast that with a dystopian vision of the future that’s darker.”
