Gavin and Stacey star Ruth Jones sheds light on what happened during THAT fishing trip ahead of the Christmas special

Gavin and Stacey’s Ruth Jones has teased what happened on that infamous fishing trip ahead of the show’s Christmas special.

The actress, 59, who plays Nessa in the show, clarified that despite rumors that Bryn West (Rob Brydon) and Jason (Robert Wilfort) were getting up to illegal mischief, what happened was ‘completely legal in Britain’.

It’s one of the last remaining loose ends of storylines that still need to be tied up.

Although the fishing trip is often hinted at, fans have never found out what happened between the two that day. All they knew was that whatever they did was considered ‘illegal in Wales’.

Speaking to Jason King and Emma Bunton on Heart Radio, Ruth and her co-star James Corden said: ‘But at the time (2019) we didn’t even think we’d ever make another episode.’

“Yes, all we can say is that it is not illegal in this country,” Ruth added.

Although the fishing trip is often hinted at, fans never found out what happened between Bryn (Rob Brydon) and Jason (Robert Wilfort), only that whatever they did was ‘illegal in Wales’.

In the finale trailer released last week, Gwen confronted her son and brother-in-law once and for all and demanded they confess what happened.

In the clip, she tells Bryn and Jason who look very sad, “30 years ago you two went on a fishing trip that almost tore this family apart.”

He will join Ruth and James (Smithy) in the highly anticipated finale as all the characters are reunited for the final time.

On Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast, Rob discussed what he thinks makes the show – which first aired in 2007 – so popular.

He said of when they first started filming, “I knew it was right. They knew it was very strong.

‘Well, you’re just making a qualitative judgement. I mean, I always say it’s a fact that most things aren’t hits, right. Most TV shows aren’t hits. Most films are not hits. Most books aren’t hits, most records aren’t hits, right.

“Most people just come and go, and that’s OK. But then about this, so the script, you go, so because I’m Welsh, I look at the portrayal of Wales, and I say, oh yes, yes, that suits me. These characters are great.

“And all the characters are so well drawn. You know, they could all stand their own show.

‘It’s beautifully written. I mean, what James and Ruth did in that script. It’s as good as anything because it combines incredible character studies with a tight, tight plot.”

After 17 years, Gavin & Stacey finally comes to an end on Christmas Day, with one final episode to say goodbye to the beloved comedy.

The upcoming special marks the return of the BBC sitcom for the first time in five years and fans are desperate to see what writers James and Ruth are up to.

At the climax of the final Christmas episode in 2019, Nessa Jenkins got down on one knee to propose to Smithy, but viewers never got to hear his answer.

And while viewers were left with a lot of unanswered questions, the finale is sure to tie up a lot of loose ends.

Although the producers and cast are working hard to keep the finale’s major storylines under wraps, several details have been confirmed that fans can look forward to.

The BBC has released a synopsis for the upcoming special, which teases a reunion between the Shipmans and the Wests.

It reads: ‘The last ever episode of this beloved comedy classic. It’s been five years since we got Nessa down on one knee, declared her love for Smithy and asked him to marry her…

‘And a lot has happened in those five years. In Barry, Bryn packing the Picasso for a trip to Essex, Stacey and Gavin look for new ways to spice up their 17-year marriage, and Gwen acts very strangely.

‘Nessa has started a new business and Neil the Baby is about to apprentice with his father…

‘In Billericay, Pam is stressed at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by newly retired Mick practicing his golf swings in the living room, and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship.’

The actress, 59, clarified that despite rumors they were getting into illegal mischief, what happened was completely legal in Britain.

The 2019 special’s huge cliffhanger has left viewers desperate for answers about Nessa and Smithy for years.

The pair had an on-off relationship during the series after several unplanned one-night stands led to their son, Neil the Baby.

In the series finale, which caught up with the characters ten years after the previous episode, it was revealed that they were successfully co-parenting their son.

And as the family gathered in Barry for the festivities, Nessa got down on one knee to propose to Smithy, with the special ending before we got to hear his answer.

Star and co-creator Ruth has confirmed that the episode will pick up exactly where it left us, meaning we’ll finally know what happened next.

Nothing has been given away so far, except for a short clip in the trailer of Smithy and Nessa sharing a flirty moment together as they dance alongside the other characters.

But the biggest clue that the couple will finally have their happily ever after are photos of the cast filming what looked like a wedding.

Gavin & Stacey: The Finale airs on Christmas Day at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
