Gas leak sparks evacuations near Tesla gigafactory in Austin

The area around a Tesla factory in Austin, Texas has been evacuated due to concerns about a possible gas leak.

The Austin Fire Department responded to calls about a possible rupture in a pipeline around 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The crew had received reports of a “hazardous materials incident” on Tesla Road, where the company is headquartered.

‘Immediate environment [is] evacuated as a general precaution,” the department said in a statement.

‘Isolation zone established to ensure the safety of anyone working in the area.’

Atmos Energy is working to close the valves completely. A construction crew working nearby damaged a natural gas line.

Technicians are now on site to repair the damage to the pipe.

Commuters have been warned to expect heavy traffic in and around the area.

Tesla Gigafactory produces Tesla cars and is the ‘main factory’ for the Cybertruck.

It is also the base of Tesla’s headquarters and is said to employ around 20,000 people at the factory.
