Gary Neville was unimpressed with Aaron Ramsdale’s ‘nervous’ start in Arsenal’s Friday night Premier League clash against league bottom Southampton.

Ramsdale’s attempted pass-out to his centre-back failed to find the net as Carlos Alcaraz charged and intercepted the loose ball before firing a cool finish past the Arsenal goalkeeper.

Commenting from above in the Emirates, Neville drew comparisons to Ramsdale’s failed pass and Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea after the United goalkeeper was similarly beaten in Thursday’s Europa League defeat to Sevilla.

Commenting on the goal, Neville stated on Sky Sports: ‘Wow I had flashbacks to David de Gea and Harry Maguire last night, the difference is when we got there this didn’t happen.

“It was telegraphed, what a start to this game, I thought Ramsdale was fantastic at Anfield a few weeks ago, he could have done better for the second goal against West Ham.

“But that is a very nervous start and has put the team from the top of the league against the bottom,” he added.

Ramsdale has been one of the Premier League’s most impressive goalkeepers this season during Arsenal’s stunning rise to the top of England’s top flight.

He made a string of excellent saves in the final embers of Arsenal’s recent 2-2 draw at Anfield to keep the Gunners well positioned in the title race for chasing Man City.

But struggled in his side’s ensuing 2–2 draw against West Ham and was criticized by Neville for not doing enough to stop Jarod Bowen’s attack, which saw the points shared at the London Stadium.
