‘You might as well set up a direct debit for the fans!’: Gary Neville claims Tottenham must pay fans AGAIN after letting in three goals in 15 minutes at Liverpool – just a week after their attack on Newcastle… like he says ‘the joy has been sapped from the club’
Gary Neville has suggested Tottenham’s players should set up a ‘direct debit’ for their fans after losing 3-0 to Liverpool within 15 minutes on Sunday afternoon.
It comes after Spurs suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat to Newcastle last weekend, a game in which they were five goals down in 21 minutes.
Tottenham released a statement mid-week suggesting they would refund fans who traveled to St James’ Park for their tickets, but After conceding a trio of goals in quick succession today, the former Manchester United defender suggested they might need to go a step further as some away supporters left the Anfield terraces.
“They left after 20 minutes last week. Some leave after 3 p.m. this week [Tottenham fans],” said Neville on Sky Sports. Martin Tyler replied: ‘Of course they got their money back from their trip to Newcastle. Also from the players themselves.’
But Neville said: “I know the Spurs players have a lot of money, but to be honest, they might as well set up a direct debit for the fans!”
Curtis Jones, Luiz Diaz and Mohamed Salah all scored in a quick start at Anfield to leave Spurs 3-0 down within 15 minutes.
“What we’re seeing here, four or five years ago, the Spurs were a busy team,” Neville said.
“They’ve turned into a team that’s behind the ball in the last four or five years with three successive managers playing more reactive football than reactive football.
“I think that’s the most important thing they have to do this summer, they have to go back to a more progressive coach, which is what they had under Mauricio Pochettino and under Harry Redknapp.” They had managers who always felt like the glass was half full of personality and character in the team.
“I have to say that over the last few years the joy has gone out of watching Spurs as they sit back on their form.
“It’s a way of winning football games that no longer exists. This football no longer exists. You may be playing a strange game, but this 5-4-1 shape bores the absolute… I’m not going to say it.
“Look at them, they’re disinterested. They have no idea how to press, there is no trigger.’
Speaking of Tottenham Hotspur’s position over today’s opponents, Neville was stunned, claiming it was ‘unbelievable’ that they are still so high in the table.
“It’s unbelievable,” he continued. ‘They are [Tottenham] still fifth in the league. It’s almost like they took defeat this season, I wouldn’t say win, but that’s what it feels like.
“I couldn’t believe the negativity and the booing [White Hart Lane] in January. They are in the Champions League, their third in the league and they are still in the cup. You think what’s going on!’
