Gary Neville rips into Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes after Liverpool rout

‘I’ve had enough of him throwing his arms around; I’ve had enough of him not running back; he COMPLAINES about everyone’: Gary Neville tears ’embarrassing’ Bruno Fernandes for his antics in Liverpool’s 7-0 win and says he FAILED as Man United captain

Gary Neville has criticized Bruno Fernandes for ‘throwing his arms’ and constantly complaining after a chaotic performance by a captain in a 7-0 thrashing of Liverpool.

Rated by Sportsmail’s Chris Sutton as one of the worst performances by a Premier League player, Fernandes was subsequently singled out by Neville for failing in his role as Manchester United captain.

“I’m going to start with Bruno Fernandes,” a furious Neville said in sky sports.

‘I’ve had enough of him throwing his arms around his teammates; I’ve had enough of him not running back; he complains about everyone.

He added: ‘They pushed him in the chest and he fell clutching his face. He has to show the performance of a captain and that was not the performance of a captain from a Manchester United player.”

Fernandes, who Neville also branded a ‘disgrace’ at the post-mortem at Anfield, appeared to wave his arms in displeasure when Erik ten Hag failed to remove him late in the game.

Their level of effort was also called into question as United conceded six second-half goals for one of the most humiliating results in their history.

“Fernandes’ body language today was embarrassing,” added fellow pundit Roy Keane.

He is a very talented boy, he is your captain. But the body language of him, waving his arms without running back, you wouldn’t be happy with him.

The Portuguese midfielder is not averse to letting his teammates have it and is often very lively on the pitch with his demeanor, but neither Keane nor Neville were having it at Anfield.

There was one incident in particular where Fernandes vied for possession with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, only to be rebuffed by the Frenchman.

Konate pushed Fernandes in the chest, only for the Portuguese to go down clutching his face.

“He touches his chest, he holds his face, that’s embarrassing of Bruno Fernandes,” Neville raged.

Rival fans jeered that he deserved an ‘Oscar’ for his theatrics.

“Some of Fernandes’ behavior in this half has been disgraceful,” Neville said after the first 45 minutes. In the end, he was even more appalled before trying to shift the focus to how United come out of this.

“I think Erik ten Hag is going to come up against them very strongly in the next 24-48 hours, he has already done so several times this season,” Neville added.

“I expect normal service to resume at the end of next week.”

Fernandes appeared in a post-match interview and said sky sports that Liverpool’s defeat was a “really bad result” for him and his teammates.

‘It’s frustrating. It’s a really bad result, we came here with a different mentality.

“The first half was really good, we controlled most of it, the second half was on our level,” Fernandes said.

We give too much space. We know the threat they are.

‘It was not our level. We know that we can be better. It’s just a matter of moving on to the next game.

‘The team tries to react but we lost a bit of balance and control.

‘We gave too much space to a team that is strong on the counter. Games come fast.

We know that this team is really good and can do really good things. We’ve set a very good standard for ourselves, now it’s just a matter of getting back to that.

“We are still in the Europa League and the A Cup, we have to get back to normal.”

‘We are in the hunt to win the next game against [Real] Betis. We have to go game by game’, added the Portuguese.
