Gary Neville mocks Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and compares him to Ed Woodward

Gary Neville has mocked Chelsea owner Todd Boehly’s approach to the transfer market by comparing him to Manchester United’s unpopular former vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

The Blues are looking to bring more players through the door before the window shuts on Thursday, having already forked out around £150million this summer.

Performances on the pitch have left a lot to be desired however, with Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat to Southampton the third time they have failed to win in five matches this season.

Neville hit out at Boehly in a reply to former England team-mate John Terry, who had slammed his former side’s display at St Mary’s.

The Sky Sports pundit in his response to Terry wrote: ‘Your man Todd Woodward needs to stop wandering round like a kid in a sweet shop.’

A Chelsea fan hit back at Neville insisting that not every American is like Manchester United’s owners the Glazer family. 

Neville replied: ‘It’s just scattergun and unsustainable. I doubt this approach will go well.’

Chelsea have had a busy summer, bringing in the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella, while Wesley Fofana is set to arrive from Leicester in a £70million deal plus add-ons.

They are also still searching for a new forward, with Barcelona and former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a possible late arrival.

They had also been linked with a potential £60million deal for 21-year-old Everton star Anthony Gordon – though Toffees manager Frank Lampard indicated on Tuesday that the youngster would stay. 

Chelsea though have been linked to a whole host of other options this summer including Cristiano Ronaldo, Frenkie de Jong, Harry Maguire and Wilfried Zaha.

Neville previously compared Chelsea’s approach in the transfer market under Boehly to United under Woodward, earlier this month.

He told the Overlap: ‘Chelsea have got that sort of, Manchester United under the Glazers, Ed Woodward, ‘I’m taking over, I’m the man now, I’m going to go out and basically buy the players’ and then they’re linked with every player that Barcelona want, every player that City want, every player that United want.

‘They’re almost like bouncing around because it feels like he [Todd Boehly] has to do something. I’m hearing his name too much. It feels like, it’s not to be disrespectful, you know he’s a prominent guy, he’s just bought the club and everything.

‘He’s fronted a fund that’s paid two and a half billion quid, but to get rid of all that football operation that’s been unbelievable for that many years and come in and do it yourself, it does feel like Ed Woodward that to me. We’ll see it develop.’

Boehly is prepared to give manager Thomas Tuchel what he needs to complete his squad as they look to build on their third place finish last season.

Their ambitions have taken a set-back though after recent losses to both Leeds and Southampton.

Terry, in the post which Neville replied to, vented that Chelsea looked ‘very unbalanced’ against the Saints. 

In a tweet on Wednesday morning, he wrote: ‘I hate seeing us get beat.

‘Southampton were very good, but we look very unbalanced at the minute. I can’t wait for the window to close and get our settled squad, team and formation.’

‘We miss Reece (James) so much when he doesn’t play. 22-years-old and a future captain in my opinion.’
