Gary Neville was left irritated by Manchester United’s midfielders in a very difficult first half against Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s title chasers took an early lead through Luis Diaz and as United pressed in search of an equalizer, they left so much space in midfield to exploit.

“It’s so easy to play against Man Utd’s midfield,” Neville said on commentary. ‘Casemiro and Mainoo are both urgent. It’s basic stuff.’

There was another moment when Bruno Fernandes started running after a ball, much to Neville’s annoyance.

‘He’ll never get that ball! Some of the things Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro did in the first half are really incredible because of their experience. It’s desperate defending against United.’

For Jamie Carragher on the co-commentary, he was surprised at how isolated Casemiro was left, especially by Kobbie Mainoo, who was due to play alongside him.

“He has really been let down,” Carragher said.

It proved very difficult for the United fans, especially as they attempted a clear shot in the first half.

It is the first time since October 2015, when against Manchester City, in a first half of the Premier League that they have not managed a single shot on target.
