‘I don’t see Graham Potter as a suitable candidate and that is also a strong rumour. I don’t see the match between Gary O’Neil and United.

‘As a fan you instinctively hear a name and you either feel it or you don’t. It’s not a feeling I’ve had. I haven’t woken up yet and thought they looked like a Man United manager.’

Neville went on to say that he would prefer Ten Hag to retain control of Manchester United rather than hand the reins to Potter, O’Neil or Southgate.

Neville said: ‘I’d like to see him stay, in the sense that at the moment I’m not quite sure who else is

‘If Jurgen Klopp was on the market or if you could bring in a world-class manager, it could be a different story.

‘But if you look at the options, we may come across someone who is not as good as Erik ten Hag and who does not have his pedigree.

‘Ten Hag now also has two years of experience at Old Trafford. The fact that he had a good first season and then a difficult one means he should be better for it.

‘So I don’t like the idea of him leaving and United bringing in the kind of names that have been suggested. That doesn’t feel good.

‘I prefer to stay with Erik ten Hag and believe in him. If he has another season like this he will obviously be gone, but we can still win the FA Cup and we can sneak into the Champions League.”

Southgate had emerged as Ratcliffe’s preference as United manager, but the 53-year-old said he will not talk to any club while he is in charge of the Three Lions.

Other possible options include former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter. Current Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi and Brentford’s Thomas Frank.
