Gary Neville believes Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold could become the best right-back of all time.

Neville’s bold claim came after the 25-year-old scored a stunning goal in the Reds’ 1-1 draw with champions Manchester City on Saturday.

Jeremy Doku had some success against Alexander-Arnold in the first half. However, the defender had a much better second half and was later named ‘Man of the Match’ after his impressive performance.

Following the clash between the two giants, Neville was full of praise for the full-back, claiming he could become the best right-back of all time.

The 48-year-old, who won 85 caps for England, also admitted that the defender needs to work on one aspect of his game.

“His performances on the ball are absolutely out of this world. The difference between me and him is night and day. I can’t even imagine what he does on the field,” Marcel said at his speech. Sky Sports podcast.

‘He plays in central midfield 50 to 60 percent of the time, scoring goals, setting up goals and providing assists. He reaches figures that right-wing parties do not achieve.

Although the Manchester United legend was quick to praise the defender, he admitted Alexander-Arnold needed to be a bit more ‘serious’ with his defence.

‘He has the material to become the best right-back of all time. But he will have to be a bit more serious in his defense because he is currently struggling to get into the England team, or he has struggled. He will also need to be a resilient, strong defensive player when Liverpool and England are under pressure.

‘I think he can add something to his game. I don’t give up on the fact that he can be a very good defender.

“I don’t think defense is that hard to learn, compared to the part of his game he has.”

Alexander-Arnold has played a key role for Jurgen Klopp’s side so far this season, playing 11 of their first 13 Premier League games.

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards also made a similar assessment of the Englishman on Saturday.

The 48-year-old believes the defender must be resilient for his club and country when called upon

“For me today we saw the best and the worst of Trent,” he said.

‘From a full-back’s perspective, his first thought is always: how can he influence the ball forward?’

“It’s the late runs like this in front of goal that are perfect for a player of his caliber and that’s the evolution of the full-back. In my day it was ‘get back into your position’, and he still has to do his job and defend well, but today it’s so different.”
