Ex-Premier League stars Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright are at odds over whether Sir Jim Ratcliffe should get rid of Erik ten Hag if he completes his minority takeover of the club.

The INEOS chief will soon complete a £1.25 billion purchase of 25 percent of United, giving him control of football operations at Old Trafford.

Thanks to a win over Chelsea in midweek, Ten Hag's team climbed to fourth place within three points of Manchester City. Nevertheless, United have had another tumultuous start to the season.

Off-the-field problems have compounded the individual mistakes, causing the team to suffer disappointing losses, including putting their Champions League hopes on the line.

As a result, former United defender Neville led a game of 'keep, last straw or ditch' of United's current squad with his fellow former Premier League stars in the latest episode of the Stick with the football podcast. And the results were revealing.

The quartet agreed on the opinions of sixteen players, although that union was most common among players whose backs they would like to see. Among them were Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, Antony, Christian Eriksen, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans.

Summer signing Sofyan Amrabat was another player that Neville and Co unanimously decided to 'dump', despite only being a few months into his career at the club.

At the other end of the spectrum were Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount.

While Marcus Rashford eventually got a harmonious keep, but not without some hesitation from Keane, who believes the 26-year-old needs to show some consistency.

“I wouldn't be sure about Marcus,” said the former United captain. 'It's the whole package. His personality, the mood swings – he's a talented player.

“He has these dips where we always talk about his confidence, things off the field; it seems to be with him constantly. Just come in every week and do the business.”

The group was most divided on the issue of the manager. Both Red Devil legends decided to 'retain' the Dutchman and decided that he remains the best person for the mammoth job.

However, Carragher chose the 'last straw', while Wright chose to 'throw him away'. Wednesday's 2-1 win over Chelsea has given Ten Hag relief from the near-constant pressure he has faced this season.

But there are tests before the end of the year with the tough games against Liverpool and Aston Villa, as well as a visit from Bayern Munich that will decide their fate in Europe.

Mailsport understands officials had hoped to broadcast Ratcliffe's arrival ahead of Tuesday's clash with Thomas Tuchel's side, but sources in the US have revealed that 'legal structural' matters have pushed back the date.

There are not believed to be any obstacles or concerns, but the delay could prove frustrating for supporters who see the arrival of the United-supporting local businessman as the beginning of the end for the Glazer family, who will retain a majority stake.

If matters remain unresolved, the upcoming Christmas holidays could push the announcement to the new year, although those involved hope this is not the case.
