Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher lead tributes to Gareth Southgate from the football world as he steps down from his role as England manager after eight years in charge following Euro 2024 final heartbreak
Gary Neville led the tributes to Gareth Southgate after it was announced that the Three Lions manager has stepped down as England manager.
The news was confirmed on Tuesday, two days after Southgate and his team failed to win the 2024 European Championship and their first major title in 58 years.
“It is time for change and a new chapter,” Southgate wrote in an emotional statement shared by England, thanking the likes of Steve Holland, his players and the England fans for their support.
Southgate indicated before the tournament that he would probably not become national coach if England did not win the competition, and revealed that the English Football Association would try to convince him to stay.
Tributes have been pouring in for the 53-year-old, including via social media, including from former defender and England coach Neville.

Gary Neville, who was England manager before Southgate arrived, wrote that he had done a ‘great job’
Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, wrote that it will be ‘very difficult to succeed the 53-year-old’
“Thanks Gareth, you did an amazing job,” Neville wrote on X, formerly Twitter, after the news was revealed.
Jamie Carragher, who fiercely defended Southgate in the aftermath of the final, meanwhile wrote: ‘It’s been an amazing ride for everyone involved over the last eight years. Two finals, semi-finals and a quarter-final in Gareth Southgate’s four tournaments is a very difficult feat to match!’
Mail Sport’s Chris Sutton added: ‘Gareth Southgate is in a class of his own and can leave his position as England manager with his head held high and great pride in what he has achieved.’
