Gary Neville has advised Harry Maguire to seek help from a psychologist to help him return to his best form.
Maguire has endured a rough patch at club level, which saw him drop out of Manchester United’s squad by Erik ten Hag, and he had a night to forget for England on Monday when he conceded a penalty after giving the ball away in the first place against Germany.
Neville has said he went through some tough times himself when he was a player, explaining that he spoke to a psychologist who helped him get through those setbacks. He thinks Maguire could also benefit from professional help.

Maguire had a difficult game against Germany on Monday, in which he had to take a penalty
‘I’ve been there myself. I gave away two really bad goals against Vasco de Gama in a Club World Cup in the early 2000s, and six months later I had a terrible tournament for England in Belgium and the Netherlands,” Neville told BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday. program by Nihal Arthanayake. .
“My pain lasted about eight months in football terms. I was poor, lost my confidence, didn’t want the ball and didn’t show me.
“When I lost my confidence, I went to a psychologist to help me through those moments.
“I would suggest that he do what I did. I went to my doctor at Manchester United. I went to a psychologist and got help. Sometimes you need outside help.’
As well as taking a penalty at Wembley, Maguire was also caught on the ball in the run-up to Germany’s second goal, and there was an audible boo from United’s centre-back before and during the match.
Neville has admitted that he has some sympathy for Maguire and insists that it is only a matter of time before he starts performing well again.
“Harry is going through a difficult moment. I felt for him last night. But he has a good character, he has a good family and people around him at Manchester United who will try to help him,” Neville added.
Gareth Southgate may now have to make a tough decision about Maguire’s place in the team
However, Neville has urged Southgate to assist Maguire and pick him for the World Cup
‘It’s a tough period for Harry, you can’t escape it. But there’s nothing you can do but show up, do your best, and don’t give in. At some point, his form will return as he has been an excellent player for United and England at times.”
Since his last appearance, there have been some calls for Maguire to be dropped from Gareth Southgate’s squad for the World Cup in November.
However, Neville disagrees with this view and is adamant that the 29-year-old deserves a spot on the plane to Qatar.
Neville continued: ‘He has to go to the World Cup. England doesn’t have a huge pool of central defenders to start with.
Harry has done very well for England and Gareth Southgate. Harry doesn’t have much competition for those two or three places in the middle.’
