Gary Lineker has called Wesley Fofana ‘the most prodigiously talented young central defender in the world’, on his £75m move to Chelsea.

Fofana, 21, is on the verge of leaving Leicester City after two years at the King Power Stadium, having joined from St Etienne in 2020.

And while quote-tweeting Fabrizio Romano’s confirmation of a fee agreement between the Premier League clubs, Foxes super-fan Lineker made the bold claim about the French Under-21 star.

‘Gutted to lose him but wish @Wesley_Fofanaa well,’ the 61-year-old pundit tweeted. ‘Every player wants to play @ChampionsLeague football so it’s understandable.

‘@ChelseaFC fans, you’ve got the most prodigiously talented young central defender in the world. Yes, I believe he’s that good.’

Romano said that documents on the switch were almost ready, ahead of Fofana’s proposed six-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

While Chelsea host Leicester in the Premier League on Saturday, depending on the completion of the deal, Fofana could be involved for the Blues on Tuesday’s trip to Southampton, or the London derby against West Ham next weekend.

Fofana’s move away from the King Power Stadium has been one of the most-talked about transfers of this window – and the French defender has only wanted to go to Chelsea.

He joins Thomas Tuchel’s side at a time when the Blues have needed defensive reinforcements after losing Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger over the summer.

Once the deal is finalised, Fofana’s Champions League campaign will begin as part of Group E alongside AC Milan, RB Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb.

Chelsea are also in the hunt for additional signings before Thursday’s transfer deadline, with rumours circulating about a number of players including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Anthony Gordon.
