Gary Lineker has pleaded with Wesley Fofana to stay one more year at Leicester despite the defender nearing a move to Chelsea.

The talented centre half has agreed personal terms with the Blues, who are looking to agree a fee with the Foxes likely to be ÂŁ80million or more.

But Lineker urged Fofana, 21, to remain at the King Power for another season – insisting ‘all the monster clubs’ will still be interested in him next summer too.

‘Signed a new long contract when badly injured. Another year and all the monster clubs will want you @Wesley_Fofanaa.’

The French wonderkid is widely considered one of the brightest prospects in European football after impressing since signing for Leicester in October 2020 for around £30m from French side Saint-Etienne.

He won the club’s Young Player of the Season award in his first campaign but last August he broke his leg in a pre-season friendly against Villarreal, limiting him to just seven league games and 12 appearances in all competitions.

However, the five-cap France Under-21 international signed a new and improved five-year contract in March, supposedly keeping him in the East Midlands until 2027.

He said at the time: ‘I’m really happy to sign a new contract. It shows the club have confidence in me. I’m really happy to be here. It’s my club, I love the fans, so I’m really happy and really looking forward to being back playing.

‘I love everything about the Club. I love the city. It’s a family which is what I love the most. Everyone is close and gets on well. We also have a great team and are continuing to progress, with a desire to win more trophies. That’s why I have committed my future to the Club until 2027. I want to achieve more with the Club.’Â
