Gary Lineker has compared Lauren James’ stamp against Nigeria at the Women’s World Cup to David Beckham’s infamous red card against Argentina in 1998.
At 0-0, England Women star James stomped on the back of Nigerian Michelle Alozie in the 86th minute of the round of 16.
After a VAR check, James was sent off and Lineker compared the incident to Beckham’s red card at the 1998 World Cup.
At Saint-Etienne, Beckham was sent off for being eliminated in the last 16 by Argentina’s Diego Simeone.
That incident led to Beckham receiving much criticism and abuse from England supporters.

Lineker wrote on Twitter, “The @Lionesses are down to 10 as Lauren James has a Beckhamesque moment of madness.”
BBC commentator Vicki Sparks also drew the comparison to the Beckham incident, describing James’ actions as ‘completely unnecessary’.
She said, “Shades of David Beckham v Argentina by Lauren James.
‘What is she doing? Why do that?
“Completely unnecessary from Lauren James.”
James had impressed for England in the group stage of the tournament. She scored the only goal in the 1-0 win against Denmark.
After that, James was outstanding in the 6-1 win over China as she scored twice, provided three assists and was named player of the match.
