Gary Lineker and his team of experts were ‘astonished’ by Robert Lewandowski’s penalty technique in Poland’s 3-1 World Cup loss to France.

Poland had a chance to console themselves in the dying embers of their round of 16 elimination at the hands of France, after being awarded a penalty following the handball of Dayot Upamecano.

Lewandowski stepped up and went on a stuttering run to try and trick Hugo Lloris into the French goal. The penalty was then saved, only for the referee to order a replay after Lloris was penalized for going off his line.

Lewandowski stuttered before the penalty and was questioned by Gary Lineker

Once again, Lewandowski stuttered in the run-up to the penalty and this time got the better of Lloris, to score his 78th goal for his country and give Poland scant consolation for the match.

Speaking in the studio, Gary Lineker was surprised by the way Lewandowski took shots from the spot and sparked a discussion about whether it was a way to get Lloris off his line.

Lineker said: ‘Lewandowski’s technique amazed us. There’s a part of me that thinks: ‘Is he deliberately doing it to get the goalie out of line, so that if he misses, then he gets another chance?’ Possibly thinking too much. It happened twice, and both times he scored the penalty, Lloris was off the line.

Mauricio Pochettino was satisfied with the way in which Lloris showed his anger over the penalty drama

Former Tottenham boss Pochettino agreed with Lineker’s point, but claimed that Lewandowski’s style was a way for the Barca star to take his shots from the point.

He said: ‘Maybe. Take penalties this way. It is a technique.

Pochettino’s response only encouraged Lineker’s point, and his dismay at the way Lewandowski not only stuttered, but lingered to let the goalkeeper move.

added. ‘We’ve seen people control and stop, but not actually stick their right foot in the air before hitting it!’

Hugo Lloris was not happy about losing his clean sheet and the way the Pole scored the penalty

Former French star Georges was not happy with the way the 34-year-old conceded the ball and questioned whether he should allow himself to stutter in qualifying.

“Every goalkeeper studies the best strikers.” George said.

‘I am surprised, normally the referee does not accept this type of goal. I’m not sure if you have the right to stop, because it creates a lot of uncertainty.

Lewandowski scored his 78th goal for Poland, which will likely be his last at a World Cup.

Pochettino was satisfied with Lloris’ reaction to the goal. The Tottenham goalkeeper, who played under the Argentine in north London, was visibly upset at conceding and the way Lewandowski converted the penalty.

He said: ‘I like Lloris’s reaction. I was very, very upset.

Adding, as Lineker agreed when saying that Lloris ‘seems annoyed’: ‘Of course. 3-0, then the last minute. Clean sheet of course. Under pressure, Lewandowski takes it this way.

Lewandowski’s goal means he now has two for his country in World Cup finals, in what is likely to be his last World Cup tournament.
