Gary Lineker admits he is ‘worried’ for Tottenham regardless of Harry Kane’s future at the club

Gary Lineker admits he’s worried about Tottenham this season whether or not Harry Kane makes the ‘great’ move to Bayern Munich.

Kane – Tottenham Hotspur and England’s all-time top goalscorer – has been heavily linked with a move to the Bundesliga champions this summer and Bayern have already knocked back two bids in their bid to sign the striker.

Reports on Friday claimed the Bavarians had made a third – and final – bid for the striker in excess of 100m euros (£86m), with Spurs also given a midnight deadline to accept or reject the offer.

The 30-year-old defender is out of contract at the end of next season and would reportedly like to move to Germany.

Spurs finished eighth last season – their lowest Premier League finish since 2008 – despite Kane scoring 30 goals, second only to Erling Haaland.

“I’m worried about Spurs no matter what happens to Harry,” Lineker told PA news agency.

“I’ve been worried about them for a while, I see where they finished last season and they’re in the worst position they’ve been in for quite some time.

“They’ve signed James Maddison exceptionally, he’s a better player than a lot of people think, I think he’s absolutely top class.

‘That’s a good addition, but they come up way too short. The new manager (Ange Postecoglou) could make a difference but Harry, the goals he scores takes that away from any team, it would be hugely difficult. It’s time to rebuild for Tottenham – rebuild, rethink, replan.’

One of the temptations for Kane to stay at Spurs is the tantalizing prospect of becoming the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer.

He is currently at 213, second on the list to Alan Shearer, and needs 48 goals to surpass the former Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle striker.

However, Lineker – who is launching his own independent podcast ‘The Rest is Football’ with Shearer – thinks trophies would mean more to Kane than individual achievements.

“Obviously it’s a personal best versus an almost guarantee to win trophies at Bayern, so I think it will be an exciting step for him,” added Lineker.

“It’s a team game, I was as selfish as everyone else and I also spoke to Alan Shearer. I asked him ‘what would you take, the Premier League record or your Premier League trophy?’ Immediately he said the trophy.

“I’ve been awarded three gold boots from three different clubs (Leicester, Everton and Tottenham) – a record in itself – but if I had to give one away or my FA Cup I would give one away – it’s a team game, you do along to win the big prizes, personal bests are wonderful but secondary.’

Very few England players have chosen to move abroad in the past, but Lineker is one who has chosen to do so. He flourished on and off the pitch during a three-year spell at Barcelona, leaving in 1989 to sign for Tottenham Hotspur.

“Everyone is different, but if you intend to experience different things and enrich your life and get to know different cultures, that’s definitely the right thing to do,” said the 62-year-old.

“What Jude Bellingham has done at Borussia Dortmund and now at Real Madrid is great, but of course it’s a personal choice. I don’t know what Harry will do, I suspect he will.

“I think it will be a fantastic move for him, he is guaranteed to score, German football is really attacking and that will suit him.”

“He would go to one of the best clubs in world football, they win trophies every year, a beautiful city – my only advice would be to learn German as it would be appreciated and it would help him settle in. If he goes.’

Gary Lineker spoke at the launch of ‘The Rest is Football’ and the independent podcast he will co-host with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.
