Garmin just released a bunch of free new features for its smartwatches and bike computers

We recently saw the unveiling of the Garmin Fenix 8 and Garmin Enduro 3 , but after launching a slew of new hardware the company is focusing on software upgrades for now – music to the ears of anyone who uses one of Garmin’s best watches.

Garmin has announced a new update for the Epix Gen 2, Fenix 7, Forerunner, Vivoactive and Venu 3 Series smartwatches, as well as the Edge 540, Edge 840 and Edge 1040 bike computers, which adds a bunch of new features.

Here are the best new features in Garmin’s September 2024 update, straight from a Garmin press release. You can update your compatible device to get immediate access to these features by going to the Garmin Connect app and opening the Devices page.

The best new features on your Garmin smartwatch and bike computer

Garmin Coach

One of the biggest new features is a series of updates to Garmin Coach. If you’re a cyclist, you’ll now get additional training plans, which are great for preparing for events.

Just like runners, the Garmin Connect app offers personalized training plans that adjust every day based on your performance.

Run Coach will also add more tailored training features, taking into account health data, running performance and recovery.

Garmin parts

Garmin Connect now lets you share your workouts and courses, or even specific locations, with other users. That could be ideal for preparing for a team event, or just for some friendly competition.

Dangers on the road

Edge 540, 840, and 1040 Series bike computers now offer warnings for road hazards based on user reports. This can help you plan a new route to avoid the hazards, or ride at a different time to see if traffic improves.

Swimming in the pool

A long-awaited addition, Pool Swim metrics are coming to Garmin devices. You can set intensity and pace targets, drill types, and customize for different pool sizes.

Group ride

Going on a trek with friends? GroupRide offers in-ride messaging between your cycling team, live location and incident detection alerts, and leaderboards for major climbs.

Garmin is pushing the communication in the device more these days, especially with the arrival of Garmin Messenger functionality, and GroupRide takes it a step further. We personally hope for a similar GroupRun functionality in the future.
