Garmin introduces a security passcode, just like the Apple Watch: will your watch get the update?
Garmin just dropped the beta update for Q1 2025 for those enrolled in the public beta testing program. While many of the updates that early users are gaining traction include improvements to Garmin Coach, Body Battery, and other features common to the best Garmin watches, one surprising new feature stood out: a security passcode for the Fenix, Enduro, Forerunner, Venu and Vivid Lines.
The feature, simply called Passcode, is designed to “help protect sensitive data if your watch is ever lost or stolen,” according to a Garmin press release. The press release states that the feature comes with an automatic wrist detection option, which will require users to enter a PIN to regain access to the watch every time it is removed from the wrist.
The feature isn’t ready yet and is said to be “available soon” as part of the first quarter beta feature launch.
Previously, Garmin users only needed a passcode to access Garmin Pay, the digital wallet you can set up in the Garmin Connect app. It makes sense to extend this entirely to the watch, as the more expensive Garmin watches contain information about your contacts and sensitive health data, and it could act as a deterrent to prevent thieves from resetting and selling the device.
Which watches will get the upgrade?
The passcode feature is coming to the following Garmin models:
The feature is not being tested on older Fenix, Venu, Vivoactive and Enduro watches, the Garmin Instinct 3 or the Garmin Lily 2. However, as this is only the beta testing phase, the feature will likely come to more Garmin watches. if the rollout is successful.
