Garmin could soon boost your sleep tracking with its rumor coach feature
According to the latest rumours, Garmin’s sleep tracking capabilities are about to get a significant boost with a new software tool – and this is something the supposedly upcoming Garmin Venu 3 watch could also take advantage of.
As noted by Android Centralthis speculation comes from The5KRunner (who credits Leaker @JohnW for the revelations), and the claim is that Garmin has a new ‘Sleep Coaching’ system in the pipeline.
The idea is to provide tailored feedback on your sleep quality, starting from a personal baseline (based on past sleep data). We’re told there will be a focus on HRV insights (heart rate variability, used to detect stress levels) to make recommendations to improve your overall health and well-being.
For active types, exercise and exercise data will apparently be included in this overall picture, and will be factored into sleep recommendations in the future. Broadly speaking, the feature, as the name suggests, will be about coaching you to better sleep habits, and will apparently appear in the very handy Morning Report as well.
The new system also facilitates nap tracking and can track your sleep during the day if you have an irregular sleep schedule for any reason – allowing body battery data to be updated based on those rest periods during the day too. That’s a feature many Garmin fans have been clamoring for.
Speaking of irregular sleep, the leak also suggests that Garmin’s coach will underline the importance of maintaining a consistent sleep pattern whenever possible, as it has been “scientifically proven” to lead to better sleep quality. We certainly wouldn’t argue with that.
Analysis: a promising feature – when it comes to older watches
Expanding the sleep functionality seems like a great move to us. I have a Garmin Venu 2S and find the sleep ratings quite useful, although I take them with a heavy dose of spice as I’m aware they aren’t always that accurate (in my experience). However, just looking at sleep evaluations against my previous data is a useful exercise.
And, of course, this is pretty much what Garmin does here: bring in a virtual sleep coach to do that for you, and do a much more in-depth job, fully integrated with your workout and daily activity details.
Will this sleep coach be AI-powered? It’s possible, but we don’t know and AI isn’t mentioned anywhere in the leak. Still, you can’t have anything new these days without putting AI in it, can you?
With this feature looking imminent, and the Garmin Venu 3 theoretically showing up next month, it makes sense to put two and two together and conclude that the Venu 3 will likely have this functionality. There’s no guarantee of that, of course, and given the reliance on heart rate variability insights, this may be limited to relatively recent Garmin watches.
Still, the hope is that when it arrives, this Sleep Coach will be retroactively applied to Garmin watches that can theoretically support it, such as the Garmin Venu 2 (which tops the list of the best Garmin watches) and my Venu 2S Naturally. Time will tell…
