Gareth Bale said an emotional farewell to the Welsh fans on Tuesday night after addressing the home crowd at Cardiff City Stadium.

Rob Page’s side will face Latvia in their Euro 2024 qualifier, and before kick-off, fans received a message from the country’s top scorer.

Bale immediately retired from football in January after sharing a lengthy post on his social media accounts.

“I just want to say, obviously, what an honor it has been to represent this country and play in front of the best fans in the world,” Bale said.

You have supported me, my family and the entire team through the ups and downs and I cannot thank you enough.

‘Honestly, it’s been the greatest pleasure playing against you my entire career. Obviously I’m going to miss playing in front of you, but make sure you continue to support the guys.

‘You fans are Welsh football. You make it so special. You make it what it is today. I’ll be cheering you on, just like you. Hopefully we’ll see each other soon in the future!’

The 33-year-old, who has played for Southampton, Tottenham, Madrid and Los Angeles FC, ended his domestic and international playing career in January.

Bale retired as the nation’s top goalscorer, 41, and the player with the most caps, 111, in Welsh history.

Former Wales striker Nathan Blake, speaking on BBC Radio Wales, praised Bale, saying: “Gareth Bale is one of the best players in the world, we have our luck starting because he’s Welsh and we had him. .

“Life after Gareth Bale is always going to be difficult, you don’t replace world-class players like that with a snap of your fingers.”

Bale’s affection for the Wales national team was clear throughout his playing career and his preferences for playing international football were often joked about.

He recently helped them qualify for the World Cup for the second time in their history and became the first Welsh player to score in the competition since 1958.
