Gareth Bale faces a race against time to be fit for Wales at the World Cup after being dropped from the Los Angeles FC roster to beat rivals LA Galaxy with a leg injury.
Bale is Wales’ main hope of success in Qatar this winter after the ex-Real Madrid man moved to the MLS to maintain his fitness and keep himself working until Rob Page’s men left for Qatar.
But he has now made his national team boss sweat after missing out on LAFC’s final showdown on Friday, with just four weeks left until the tournament kicks off.
Gareth Bale has left Wales, fearing he could miss the World Cup after a leg injury
He was left out of LAFC’s biggest game of the season as he continues to manage his fitness
The fact that Bale missed LAFC’s most important game of the season in the Western Conference semi-finals should be a concern as Bale was thought to have been stopped from playing in the club’s biggest clashes.
LAFC managed to win 3-2 against Galaxy without Bale in the lineup and their manager Steve Cherundolo moved to allay fears about his fitness as he spoke shortly after the game.
“No more injury to report, he should be back in training in a few days,” he told reporters.
Bale has a troubled history of injuries throughout his career with leg problems a common problem for the ex-Southampton and Tottenham star – knee, calf and thigh problems have plagued him as a player throughout.
Wales prioritized being fit for the World Cup and played no more than 62 minutes for LAFC this season – despite playing the full 90 for Wales against Poland last month
Bale has only started twice this season for LAFC after moving from Real Madrid
The 33-year-old has only started twice for LAFC since joining the club this summer and coming off the bench in ten other games, scoring twice in that time.
He has not once played the full 90 minutes for Galaxy so far – the most action he has played is 62 minutes against Minnesota United in September.
But with signs that his fitness managed to save him for Wales, he played 90 minutes for his country in their 1-0 defeat to Poland later that month.
His last game for LAFC came five minutes off the bench against Portland Timbers early this month.
