Arsenal’s 6-0 thrashing of Sheffield United was marred by an injury to Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli on Monday evening.

The 22-year-old contributed to his side’s stunning win at Bramall Lane by scoring the third goal of the match as Arsenal retained their place in the Premier League title race.

Martinelli scored his eighth goal of the season in all competitions by finding the net in the 15th minute, but was later subbed off due to concerns over his fitness.

He emerged for the second half with Arsenal in complete control of the English top flight before being withdrawn as he limped to the touchline with the help of the visitors’ medical staff.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta later revealed that the winger had suffered a cut and was unable to continue in the match, sparking concern among supporters ahead of an upcoming series of crucial matches.

Speaking full-time to Sky Sports, Arteta said: ‘Gabi is just a cut, a light cut and we’ll see how he goes.’

Martinelli has previously been hampered by injury this season, missing six games during a 20-day absence from September to October last year.

A previous hamstring injury led to fears the youngster would see his impact limited during Arsenal’s title-challenging season before making a full recovery.

It was later revealed that Martinelli suffered a cut on his foot before being withdrawn from the match

Arsenal’s medical staff will now assess the extent of Martinelli’s cut before determining whether he can play in Saturday’s home game against Brentford.

Arteta also provided an update on Arsenal and England star Bukayo Saka, who was also withdrawn due to a fitness issue.

The Gunners boss revealed that Saka was not feeling ‘well’ and had to be left out of the action against Sheffield United.

“Bukayo felt sick and unwell, so we took him away,” Arteta said.
