The timestamp on the selfie shows that it was taken at 4:37 p.m. on August 12, 2021.
Minutes later, a witness called 911 and said they had just seen Laundrie attack Gabby in a parking lot in Moab.
The image was shared by lawyers for Gabby’s family, who are filing a lawsuit against the police in Moab, Utah. The lawsuit alleges that they did not handle the incident properly.
Gabby has tears in her eyes and a blood red bruise around her eye.
Lawyers for his family say officers responding to the incident ignored his injuries. They say the failure of the police to take adequate measures to protect Gabby contributed to her murder earlier that month.
Gabby’s family filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Moab Police Department, alleging officers failed to properly handle the 911 call after a witness claimed she saw Brian punch Gabby and attempt to steal her phone just a few weeks before his death.
The lawsuit names the department, two officers who responded to the call and two former leaders.
Commenting after the images were released, Brian Stewart of the law firm of Parker & McConkie said: “Moab police failed to listen to Gabby, investigate her injuries and the severity of her assault, and failed to follow their own training. “. , Utah laws and policies.’
Police body camera footage from their response to the incident shows Petito wearing the same clothing as in the selfie.
She told officers that Laundrie “grabbed my face” and gestured to show them how she was attacked.
