Musician G Flip has spoken to Abbie Chatfield about their gender journey.
In an interview on the latest episode of Abbie’s podcast It is muchthe Australian musician, 29, opened up about identifying as “non-binary.”
Abbie’s producer asked G Flip if they’ve had any kind of backlash since coming out.
“Oh yes, a nice dose,” they replied, before referring to their relationship with Selling Sunset’s Chrishell Strause.
“I knew there would be a backlash. Me and Chrisshell knew that when I went in. We knew we were going to get a lot of hate, and I knew people would misinterpret me and tell me I’m a woman.”
The indie pop star then claimed that multiple people on social media have sent her “hateful comments” such as “you are a woman” directly.
After Abbie asked why people are so adamant about calling the non-binary artist a woman, the non-binary artist suspected it had something to do with genitals.
“They just think ‘you got pu**y, you’re a woman’, I don’t know.”
Abbie asked G Flip about their “gender dysphoria,” the term used to describe when someone believes their personal idea of their “gender identity” doesn’t match their biological sex.

“I feel like I’ve had gender dysphoria all my life and didn’t understand my gender,” the singer said.
“When I was a kid, I looked at myself in the mirror and thought, ‘what are you? You’re a boy, but you’re a girl. You’re a girl, but you have boy brains in you because you’re half.’ a boy.”‘
The Melbourne-born hitmaker continued their self-reflection:
“When I started learning and getting educated and teaching myself to be nonbinary, it was like holy shit.”
Abbie wondered how this learning process started and asked if it was someone G Flip saw in the media or if they met someone in person who identified as non-binary.

While the Australian musician claimed there were multiple people in the media who influenced them, a discussion with a friend about pronouns led to a shift in their self-image.
‘Then I started using she/she pronouns in my smaller circles. When I felt ready to tell the world, I put something on Instagram,” said G Flip.
‘Sex and gender are different. My gender is still female and the people I like, their gender is also female,” they continued, explaining to Abbie why they also identify as lesbian.

In May, G Flip and Chrisshell announced via Instagram that they were married.
Speaking to Kyle and Jackie O earlier this year, G Flip said they are the first non-binary person or woman Chrisshell has been with.
“I wasn’t what she was up to, she always thought there was a man in her future, but then I came along and I kind of changed it up a bit,” they said.
When asked if it’s common for people to think they’re straight but then fall in love with someone in the LGBTQ+ community, the musician said: ‘I think it’s happening more and more these days, in the queer community you hear a lot of it about.
“You can fall in love with a soul, and with me and Chrisshell, we really tried our best not to fall in love, but we succeeded.”
