Police in India have arrested a man who raped an eight-year-old girl before strangling her and dismembering her corpse to dispose of her remains.
Kamlesh Rajput, 21, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of rape and murder after police officers investigating the girl’s disappearance discovered bloodstains at Rajput’s home in Lopda village, near Udaipur city.
Investigators later found a series of plastic bags containing the girl’s remains in a piece of remote vacant lot not far from the farm of the victim’s family.
Rajput was taken into custody and later confessed to kidnapping the girl from the farm, taking her to his family home and raping her. He then admitted to strangling her and dismembering her body to remove the remains.
A sea of protesters from Lopda village and surrounding towns took to the streets of Udaipur this week to demand the death penalty for Rajput and more protection for women and girls.
They also called on authorities to award the girl’s family the equivalent of £50,000 in compensation for their loss.

Udaipur Police Inspector Vikas Sharma told Times of India: ‘When [the girl] did not return home on March 29, her relatives filed a missing person complaint with Mavli Police Station. Since she was an underage girl, we filed an FIR and started looking for her.
“Our men in civilian clothes passed nearby [Rajput’s] house and found bloodstains. Therefore, he was held on suspicion.
“Later, on Saturday night, we recovered the girl’s dismembered body parts in a secluded spot near his home. The suspect was interrogated and confessed that he had kidnapped the girl, strangled her and later chopped off her body parts into several pieces.’
Sharma added that Rajput was a “drop-out from school” who seemed “undisturbed” by the heinous crime he had committed.
Udaipur police said they are analyzing swabs taken during the autopsy of the victim’s remains, but confirmed they already have enough evidence to prove the girl was raped.
Footage circulated on social media showed Udaipur police officers posing for a photo after detaining Rajput. They also detained his mother and father, who they say were protecting their son.
