Furious viewers slam the ABC’s New Year’s Eve coverage as ‘woke garbage’: ‘Another taxpayer funded divisive load of s**t’
Furious viewers have slammed the ABC for making its family-friendly 9pm coverage of the iconic New Year’s Eve celebrations too ‘woke’ in the message.
The annual celebration is usually known as the ‘children’s fireworks display’, with the younger crowd going to bed before midnight.
The national broadcaster showed the fireworks going off at the iconic Sydney Harbor Bridge, which was decorated with black, red and yellow floodlights, the color of the Indigenous flag.
Unimpressed viewers quickly took to social media to condemn the ABC for ‘politicising’ the annual celebration.
‘Glad that the ABC has once again decided to make NYE a political statement again. Children don’t need fun and fireworks at 9 p.m. without a good dose of cultural education. WAKE UP,” one viewer snapped.
“Another taxpayer funded a lot of division,” a second person added.

“Every year I watch the NYE fireworks on the ABC and all the artists performing are full of racist undertones,” a third person chimed in.
“The ABC’s reporting is an absolute disgrace,” someone else wrote.
“How embarrassing is the 9pm music and theme… oh wait, it’s the ABC,” complained another viewer.
Others complained about the music and the ‘z-grade’ hosts.
“ABC’s NYE coverage is embarrassing… is it a conscious decision to get Gen Z presenters?” someone else posted.
Elsewhere, Charlie Pickering made an embarrassing blunder as ABC’s New Year’s Eve broadcast started at 8.30pm.
He was speechless when he introduced the reporting together with co-presenter Zan Rowe.
“Tonight we see the new year live from all over the world, ah all over the world, ah good start,” he said.

Rowe started to interrupt before Pickering quickly corrected himself.
‘From the world famous Sydney Opera House on Gadigal Country.’
The blunder caused laughter from his co-host.

The broadcaster airs the NYE celebrations every year and they are regularly criticized by upset viewers.
Last NYE 2023, after the characters from the popular cartoon Bluey were projected onto the pillars of the Sydney Harbor Bridge, the show started at 9pm with a racially charged monologue, followed by a rap performance of a song called ‘Our People’ by Indigenous rap group ‘3 Percent’.
The song criticizes Australians for voting ‘no’ to the Voice to Parliament, calling them ‘sick’ and saying the country is going ‘backwards’.
Confused parents took to social media to complain that Calling Country’s fireworks starrer was not suitable for children.

More than a million people are expected to flood the port city, with viewpoints at Mrs Macquarie’s Point, the Royal Botanic Garden, the Domain and the Opera House.
Meanwhile, there were delays on Sydney’s transport network after rail staff halted work on the city’s busiest night of the year.
Many trains came to a standstill during the five-minute halt at 6pm as members of the Rail, Tram and Bus unions stopped work to put stickers on trains to protest pay conditions.
The union warned commuters to expect “brief, minor disruption.”
‘This short action at 6pm is a low-level action that allows rail workers to take part in a highly visible activity… while continuing to campaign for the fair wages and conditions they deserve.’
It then added: ‘Any continued disruptions or cancellations on the rail network this evening and into the new year can only be attributed to the mismanagement of Sydney Trains.’
