Furious footy fans beat Channel Seven as they are overcome by change leaving them stuck watching Border Patrol instead of the grand finale

  • Channel 7 has exclusive rights to the AFL Grand Final, including streaming
  • Fans who watched streaming platform 7Plus were locked out in the run-up
  • Instead, the 7Plus app would only play Border Force Australia reruns
  • It infuriated footy fans with no access to free-to-air services across Australia

AFL fans trying to access the biggest day in footy will be banned from the 2022 grand final because Channel 7 will not stream the decider through digital services.

Outraged supporters hoping to use digital platform 7Plus to watch the decision between the Sydney Swans and Geelong Cats were cut off during the pre-game entertainment show by megastar Robbie Williams.

Instead, they were treated to a best-of collection of clips from Border Force Australia.

“If only I could actually watch it instead of Border Security (with 7Plus on my Google TV). Worked perfectly until the end of the warm-up. Very frustrating,” wrote an AFL fan named April.

That’s despite Channel 7 clearly stating on their 7Plus website that the grand finale would be available via the streaming service.

‘Um. If you’re trying to watch the AFL Grand Final, you’re going to a 5-hour Border Force marathon,” Tom Engelhardt tweeted.

Daily Mail Australia attempted to access the grand finale using an Android smart TV, a Samsung Galaxy Android device, multiple PCs and two different iPads and couldn’t get anything but Border Force Australia.

The decision to keep digital users out of the grand finale has angered many, with many viewers unable to access the free-to-air network to watch the big game.

“The fact that I can’t stream the AFL Grand Final on @7plus @7AFL in 2022 is a shame. Apparently it’s meant to work on my Android TV, but it doesn’t. So now I’m looking for a pirate stream because broadcasting rights in this country are stupid and bad for consumers,” Chad Ryan tweeted.

What a mess, not working on 7plus app on our Android TV, 6 month old Android phone or Apple TV……. Seriously 7,” Ross Thomas tweeted.
