Furious Brits arrive in Cyprus only to find it unrecognizable amid construction work with huge holes and exposed cables… ‘and the holiday rep was even wearing a helmet and a safety vest’

A couple claims they were stunned when they arrived at their hotel in Cyprus only to discover that the area looked more like a building site than a luxury resort.

Helen Milner, 56, had flown to Paphos, Cyprus, with her partner Anthony earlier this summer for a week in the sun, only to encounter construction workers and heavy machinery.

She had booked the outing through Jet2, who, she says, sent their rep to meet the couple on site while wearing a helmet and Hi-Vis vest.

Bank clerk Helen claims she and her partner had trouble even getting to and from the main entrance of the holiday resort of Basilica, with the construction site dominating the surrounding area.

A video filmed by Helen shows the screen guests having to navigate to exit the luxury hotel.

Helen continues filming as she exits the hotel and begins to wander down the gravel path that is supposed to serve as the main road in and out of the resort.

Construction workers in vests are working all over the street, while you can also see bare cables lying in the open air along deeply dug holes.

Exposed cables sit under a fence that would be easily accessible to members of the public and provide a less than idyllic view for the escape.

As the video continues, a blue truck removes large pieces of debris from the resort, which is then harassed by a forklift that stops Helen from leaving the resort until it has passed.

Helen took to social media last week to share her frustration with the holiday, writing on Wednesday: ‘Don’t think I will ever book with Jet2 after our holiday to Cyprus, this is Paphos in June this year.

“Our hotel is on this street, the Jet2 rep always arrived with a helmet and Hi-Vis.”

Her post received over 100 likes with hundreds of comments from people sharing Helen’s frustration.

Today Helen said: ‘My partner and I went to Cyprus in June this year but we were so shocked when we were told about work outside the hotel and it had taken a little longer than expected.

‘It was more presented to us as if it was a burst water pipe or general road maintenance – the hotel itself was ok, we had a two bedroom apartment and it was ok but a little dated.

‘The outside was much worse than we were explained, but Jet2 rejected our complaint.

‘We were told there was work to be done, but not to that extent or we wouldn’t even have gone to Paphos.’

More than a million British tourists visit Cyprus each year, by far the largest demographic of the country’s four million holidaymakers.

After being contacted by MailOnline for comment, Jet2 has said it is investigating the incident.
