Furious Aussie man’s grocery shop rant sparks fierce backlash: ‘Get a job’

An Australian father has dramatically increased his grocery costs after a single shopping bag cost him $85, but he didn’t get the sympathetic response he was hoping for.

The single father of two shared a photo of his modest grocery store on

The 51-year-old said he is on Job Seeker and caring for his 24-year-old son, who has a disability but can barely afford to keep food on the table.

But the unemployed father’s aggressive post, which included telling people to “fuck off” if they told him to get a job, sparked a fierce debate.

Some sympathized with the man, saying they were left with bill shock after an expensive trip to the cash register.

‘Care’s pension here. I shop at ALDI for my food and cleaning products,” one person said.

‘You have meat! I remember that stuff (I’m on Jobseeker instead of DSP). When Job Seeker doubled for a short period during Covid, the first thing I bought was a steak,” said another.

“To be honest, I think you did a good job for $85.”

“Thank goodness for those little yellow stickers,” the man agreed, noting that he scored the price cuts at 10 a.m.

However, others criticized the father’s choice of groceries and decision to “survive on handouts” instead of working.

“You say you want to double the number of job seekers… I don’t want to pay people not to have a job and to be able to buy twice as much medicine a week at taxpayer expense,” said one critic.

‘Don’t buy processed foods! Buy seasonal fruits and vegetables!’ another suggested.

“I agree that job seekers should be raised to the average Australian wage. I shouldn’t have to get up and work six days a week to support my family,” said another.

One also pointed out the wedges, berries and meat, claiming his eating habits should reflect his budget.

But this further enraged the man, who replied, “You do not know my household.”

This caused a lot of offside.

“It’s very difficult for someone to have compassion when you pass off as a palooka. Get ready, Samantha,” a man said.

One man pointed to the raspberries and joked that they would make up 40 percent of the store. This struck a chord.

“They were $4.90, so I guess you’re bad at math,” the man replied.

“It was clearly a joke, just try to let some lighthearted humor and joy into your life, it really helps in this dark world we live in,” the joker shot back.

“But seriously, if you’re on a budget, $5 berries probably aren’t a priority,” said another.

The man added that his disabled son has a Coles brand fixation, making it impossible to shop elsewhere.
