Fuming Liverpool fans label ITV news reader as ‘unprofessional’ after hilarious comment on the Premier League title race

  • The ITV newsreader made a hilarious comment about the top-level title race
  • Liverpool fans were angry about the presenter’s statement on Thursday

ITV News presenter Rageh Omaar found himself in hot water with Liverpool fans after making a tongue-in-cheek comment about the Premier League title race during Thursday night’s show.

The newsreader is a self-confessed Arsenal fan and couldn’t resist commenting on Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United, which put Jurgen Klopp’s side back at the top of the table.

Arsenal are just two points behind Liverpool heading into the weekend, while reigning champions Manchester City are three points ahead heading into the final few weeks of the season.

Liverpool face a tough trip against rivals Man United on Sunday, while Arsenal take on Brighton and Man City make the trip to the capital to take on Crystal Palace.

Omaar is clearly hoping the Reds make a mistake this weekend and give Arsenal a chance to reach the top after hilariously criticizing Liverpool’s win over the Blades.

Announcing Liverpool’s latest victory, the ITV presenter hilariously said: ‘To sport now and the battle for the Premier League title is still as close as anything after Liverpool returned to the top of the table.

‘They beat bottom club Sheffield United 3-1. Alexis Mac Allister scored the goal that turned the game around, so Liverpool are unfortunately two points ahead of Arsenal.’

Alexis Mac Allister rescued victory for the Anfield hosts with a long-range stunner before Cody Gakpo added a third goal in the 90th minute to condemn Chris Wilder’s side to a 21st defeat of the season.

However, Omaar’s joke is not going down well with Reds supporters, who are furious online over his favoring Arsenal in the race for the Premier League crown.

A Liverpool fan told X to vent his frustration: ‘My husband is a Liverpool supporter and he was furious at this comment, news presenters are supposed to be impartial!’

Another criticized Omaar’s obvious joke: ‘ITV, it is completely unacceptable for your news reporter to say it is ‘regrettable’ that Liverpool football club has returned to the top of the table. Very unprofessional of that presenter.’

However, Arsenal supporters jumped to the ITV presenter’s defence, hitting back: ‘Omaar always liked you as a newsreader, and now I find out you’re a Gooner too. Love it.’

Another supportive response read: “Lol it’s just some banter. Rageh Omaar is a well-known Arsenal fan.’

Omaar has not commented directly on the incident, but has posted a number of Arsenal comments on his X profile in response to criticism.
