Full list of 66 Macy’s stores closing in early 2025… as shoppers rush to snap up 90% sales

Macy’s has named the first 66 of 150 stores it is closing as it desperately tries to revive its faltering business.

They will close in the next four to 12 months, but not before having a sale with discounts of up to 90 percent. Discounts start lower and increase towards the end.

Plans to close 150 underperforming stores by the end of 2026 were first announced by the embattled retailer in February last year. The number of stores will be reduced by a third to 350.

“We are closing underproductive Macy’s stores so we can focus our resources on our future stores,” said Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s.

In addition to revamping the stores it won’t close, Macy’s also plans to expand its presence with 15 new Bloomingdale’s and 30 new Bluemercury locations.

Across the board, Macy’s saw sales decline last year. But bosses said sales of the 50 that have already been renewed have increased.

Bosses kept the 66 doomed stores open over the festive period to allow regular customers to shop before Christmas and then time for sales to close.

Closures include the Kingston Collection shopping center in Massachusetts. See below for the full list.

Macy’s initially planned to close 55 in the first 12 months, but increased its goals to 66.

Once all 150 stores are closed, Macy’s will be left with just 350 stores — a far cry from its peak of about 1,100 in 2008.

News of Macy’s closure on Thursday came on the same day as its rival Kohl’s said it is closing 27 locations in 14 states, the major department store announced Thursday.

Like many department stores, Macy’s is suffering from declining sales amid the stratospheric rise of online rivals and the demise of America’s suburban malls.

Tony Spring was appointed CEO last year and announced a major turnaround.

Macy’s has been dealing with an accounting scandal involving one employee who hid more than $150 million in delivery fees. The company insists this was a one-off incident, but admits the error cost them $79 million in their full-year guidance.

Macy’s is one of many retailers closing stores as the ongoing “retail apocalypse” forces brick-and-mortar locations to contend with rising theft and shrinking profit margins.

Through mid-December, US retailers have closed 7,300 stores – almost 60 percent more than in 2023.

The most recent major retail bankruptcy was Container Store, which filed for Chapter 11 protection on December 22.

Earlier that month, Big Lots said it would suspend sales at all its U.S. stores after filing for bankruptcy in September.

The company initially said it would close all of its 963 remaining locations after a sale to a private equity firm fell through, but has since found an investor to keep between 200 and 400 open.

Meanwhile, after nearly four decades as an American retail institution, Party City announced last week that it would close all of its 850 stores in the coming weeks.

It also emerged in October that Walgreens will close more than 1,200 stores in an effort to get the struggling chain back on its feet.

Meanwhile, Badcock Home Furniture & More said in late July that it is closing all of its 380 stores across the South after filing for bankruptcy earlier this year.

Dollar stores have also been hit hard: 99 Cents Only announced in April that it would close all 371 locations in California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada.

Family Dollar has said it will close 1,000 stores under its own banner and that of sister company Dollar Tree over the next three years.
