Fulham’s Calvin Bassey take a dig at Manchester United’s desire after scoring in his side’s first Old Trafford win in 21 years

Fulham star Calvin Bassey delivered a scathing assessment of Manchester United, claiming Marco Silva’s side ‘wanted more’ after their first win at Old Trafford in 21 years.

Bassey had given Fulham the lead from a corner midway through the second half, but Harry Maguire scored the equalizer in the 89th minute.

Fulham rallied and got the winning goal their performance deserved when Alex Iwobi converted a smart counter-attack in the 97th minute.

Asked whether United had become a soft touch after a 10th Premier League defeat, especially in midfield, Bassey said it was down to desire and not quality.

“I don’t think you can just come here and overrun them. You can see the quality of the players they have,” he said.

“They have top players and a top manager and players who can have an impact off the bench, but we were just more into it and I felt like we wanted it more today. That showed in the way we played.”

Fulham came to Old Trafford with the second-worst away form in the league and they had not achieved a win in the M16 since a 3-1 win in 2003.

But United are unpredictable and depleted by injuries to Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw last week, Fulham sensed an opportunity.

“Of course we believed in it,” Bassey added.

“If you saw the last games we played, even the game we played at home (against United) when we lost at the end, it was just the details and making sure we got the details right. Thank God it worked out for us.”

While Iwobi took the highlights after scoring the winner, Bassey was keen to emphasize how important Silva is to this group.

The Fulham boss became increasingly animated on the technical front, bouncing around with joy and anger at decisions and missed chances. Try as he might, he tried to kick every ball with his players.

“100 percent,” Bassey said, when asked if Silva instilled their desire in them.

‘Even if we are not good on the ball, the minimum we can do is work as hard as the team we are playing against, or more. That is our basis and I think we have done that well all season.

“Some results were unfortunate and some results went our way.”
