Fulham 3-1 Newcastle PLAYER RATINGS: Who had a ‘costly howler’? Which superstar was ‘vastly diminished’? And what made Harvey Barnes the visitors’ best player?

Fulham secured a 3-1 win over Newcastle thanks to goals from Raul Jimenez, Emile Smith Rowe and Reiss Nelson at Craven Cottage.

Marco Silva’s side took the lead within five minutes after Jimenez made a beautiful turn to find the net, with Smith Rowe scoring 17 minutes later.

The Magpies did score a consolation goal through Harvey Barnes, but it was not enough to prevent their first defeat of the season.

In the dying minutes of the match, substitute Nelson decided the game with a goal in injury time, securing all three points for the home side.

Here, CRAIG HOPE from Mail Sport gives player ratings for Eddie Howe’s team.

Newcastle Reviews

Nick Paus – 4.5

Howler for Fulham’s second – what was he thinking when the ball slipped through his palm? Great save early in the second half to keep his team in the game, but error proved costly.

Kieran Trippier-5

Barely got past the halfway point in the first half and there was no attacking threat. Doesn’t seem fit for the first start of the season.

Fabian Schaar – 4.5

So soft on Jimenez’s opener as he lets it off and lets the striker turn and finish. Also guilty of a huge miss as he’s doing well to steal the ball and find himself free before slotting into the side netting at 2-1.

Dan Burn – 5

Not a great return to old club and was sometimes strung along. Stabilized second half but was exposed to poor midfield performances for him.

Lloyd Kelly – 4.5

Struggled with Traore and hasn’t had the best start to Newcastle’s career. Left back position is up for grabs but hasn’t convinced yet. Already on the hook at the break.

Nick Pope (right) produced a costly blunder to allow Emile Smith Rowe’s shot to go in

Joelinton – 4.5

Gave the ball away for the opener and hasn’t looked good since the midfield masterclass on the first weekend of the season. Passing is sloppy and he can’t seem to impose himself.

Bruno Guimarães – 4

Poor form continues and a miserable afternoon capped by Fulham giving them their third in injury time. Doesn’t look fit and opposition midfield gets behind him with regularity and ease.

Joe Willock – 4.5

Was recalled to add legs to midfield but saw Fulham run him past. Has looked under the weather himself and needs more games after long injury absence.

Anthony Gordon – 5.5

Played right, left and centre and never really looked comfortable until the game stretched out in the second half. Was a threat then but should have scored when he turned away at 2-1.

Alexander Isak – 4.5

Recovered from a toe scratch to a feature, but was isolated and did not appear to be at his peak. A vastly diminished version of his brilliant self.

Harvey Barnes – 6.5

Super finish in front of goal and was the best of Newcastle’s attacking starters. Tired towards the end but now has to stay in after being recalled.

Substitutes

Lewis Hall (for Kelly 46) 5.5

There were some nice moments, but he also missed the ball a few times.

Jacob Murphy (for Willock 46) 6.5

Direct impact in creating Barnes’ goal within 30 seconds of coming on.

Sandro Tonali (for Joelinton 74) 5

Barely involved. One nice free kick that was saved late in the game.

Tino Livramento (in for Trippier 74) 5

Member of the New England selection, but the form is not so good.

William Osula (for Gordon 83) 5

Too late to hit and barely got a kick.

Howe’s team lacked intensity and identity in the first half and were plagued by individual errors

Manager – Eddie Howe 5.5

His team lacked intensity and identity in the first half and were plagued by individual errors. His double substitution at half-time changed the momentum, but the defeat was deserved.
