Fujifilm GFX100 II gets rumored name, launch date and a new 100MP sensor
Following an official announcement that the latest Fujifilm X Summit will take place on September 12 (see YouTube video below), Fujifilm Rumors confidently shared that the star of the show will be the Fujifilm GFX100 II.
A medium format mirrorless camera is being touted as the next mirrorless camera to expect from Fujifilm, and the rumored name suggests it will be the successor to the four-year-old mirrorless camera. GFX100a 100MP flagship that raised the bar for image quality upon its release in 2019.
Two years later, Fujifilm packed most of this flagship model’s technology, including the eye-catching 100MP sensor, into a smaller and simpler body that costs half the price – the GFX100S. With its smaller brother on the scene, there was little reason to part with twice the cash for a GFX100, unless you needed its larger body and battery.
Since the GFX100, we’ve also loved the Hasselblad X2D 100C, a divine 100MP medium format camera that features in our guide to the best mirrorless cameras. It’s going to be a tough call for Fujifilm to steal our hearts back, so what can we hope for from the rumored GFX100 II?
GFX100 II: what to expect
Stockholm will host Fujifilm’s second X Summit in 2023, where everyone can come and try out the latest camera gear. Earlier we made a list GFX camera with a stacked sensor as new gear we hope to see. However, it is unlikely that the GFX100 II will have the stacked sensor type found in the X-H2S – Fujifilm’s fastest camera on the market – and rumors suggest a new 100MP version instead, but with a faster sensor readout that cuts shutter time and improves autofocus speed. Assuming it will be paired with the latest X-Processor 5 which Fujifilm claims is twice as fast as the previous generation processor, the GFX100 II could be the fastest medium format camera out there.
The GFX100 II might also have a modular feel, with a similar form factor to the smaller GFX100S, but with the option to attach a battery grip to make it bigger and improve battery life – a feature the GFX100S doesn’t have. offers. That option to adjust camera size and battery life is the best of both worlds, and a bonus is that the detachable battery grip might come included in the box.
The GFX100 II could also work with a tilt EVF accessory that tilts up for easy viewing from low angles, making it ideal for waist height shooting – again an accessory that not all GFX cameras are compatible with.
The sum of all rumors points to a more refined shooting experience that could make medium format accessible to a wider range of creatives, even if price could prove a sticking point. Every new GFX camera creates a stir, and we’re excited to see what’s in store for us next month in Stockholm.
