Frozen actor Jonathan Groff gets mysterious role in Doctor Who… after iconic series RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinxx adds Monsoon to cast

Frozen actor Jonathan Groff has been given a mysterious role in the iconic British sci-fi series Doctor Who, as it turned out this week.

The show, which began in its first incarnation in 1963, follows the exploits of a ‘Time-Lord’ named the Doctor who travels through various historical eras.

A range of actors, including David Tennant and Matt Smith, have played the Doctor, who periodically “regenerates” and takes on a new body.

Rwandan-born thespian Ncuti Gatwa will take on the role for the first time in the upcoming season, which will premiere in 2024.

Now the BBC has told it deadline that Jonathan will join the cast as a “mystery guest” and “jump aboard the TARDIS.”

Able to travel through both space and time, the TARDIS is the Doctor’s means of transport and is famously disguised as a phone booth.

Russell T Davies, the programme’s showrunner, crowed: ‘This is an incredible coup and a great honor to have such a huge star on our set. So put on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!’

Jonathan will be part of a cast that will include 18-year-old Coronation Street alumna Millie Gibson as the Doctor’s ‘companion’, aka his human sidekick.

The current revival of the show was initiated by Russell in 2005 after the legendary program had been inactive for 16 years.

He left the show in 2010 to make way for Steven Moffat, who was eventually succeeded by Chris Chibnall until last year when Russell returned.

During his absence from Doctor Who, Russell wrote such programs as A Very English Scandal about the Thorpe Affair and It’s A Sin about the AIDS crisis.

Jonathan first rose to fame on Broadway in the 2006 musical Spring Awakening opposite rising star Lea Michele.

Lea and Jonathan got back together when he rose to fame on TV during his recurring guest role on Glee, where she was part of the main cast.

Since then, he has made his presence felt in a number of high-profile projects, including the Disney movie Frozen and the original Broadway cast of Hamilton.

News of his casting for Doctor Who follows first-look footage showing RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon in a villainous role.

Dressed in robes designed with a piano motif, Jinkx’s character was adorned with jewelry and the camera could be seen flashing a sinister grin.

“Here’s your first look at @JinkxMonsoon in character… as the Doctor’s most powerful foe yet! #DoctorWho,” wrote the show’s official Twitter account.
