From La Voz to the Olympics! Singing sensation Jazmin Sawyers is convinced she sees herself on a medal podium in Paris 2024 after becoming British Indoor Long Jump Champion in Birmingham

  • Former ITV The Voice contestant wants to make it an Olympic hit
  • Paris 2024 is a chance for Sawyers after previously finishing eighth

Jazmin Sawyers is hoping to hit the high notes on the Olympic stage next summer after the long jumper-turned-singer became British indoor champion on Sunday.

The 28-year-old is best known for appearing on ITV’s The Voice in 2017, when she topped her blind audition. But Sawyers still wants to be a great voice in athletics and she believes she is capable of medaling at Paris 2024 after finishing eighth in the long jump final at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

“I see myself on an Olympic podium,” she said after triumphing at the UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham on Sunday with a best jump of 6.73m. A lot of people look at me and think, “She’s someone who could scrape a medal at European level, but she’ll never be there at world level.”

“But I am getting closer and closer to the kind of distances that will take me to win a medal at world level. Being so consistent indoors is a very good sign for me to head outside.”

In the more immediate future, Sawyers is targeting a podium place at next month’s European Indoor Championships in Istanbul to go with the bronze he won at the European Outdoor Championships last summer.

“A medal is the minimum for me now so as not to leave upset,” she added. “Getting that medal last year after going so long without one has really lit that fire in me.”

On the final day of action at Utilita Arena, Ellie Baker broke Zola Budd’s 37-year-old championship record by winning the women’s 1500m in a time of 4 minutes and 6.73 seconds. Neil Gourley beat George Mills, son of former English footballer Danny, in the men’s 1500m.
