1899, the highly anticipated horror of the Netflix era, was released in its entirety on the streaming platform on Thursday, much to the delight of fans.
The gripping German mystery follows a group of European migrants who travel from London on a steamship named Kerberos to start a new life in New York City, created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar.
Set in the early 1900s, the passengers are optimistic about the future, until they encounter another migrant ship stranded in the open sea.
A rather simple journey to the promised land becomes a terrifying nightmare of epic proportions.

Emily Beecham as Maura Franklin
Since her standout early role in the 2009 Sally Wainwright thriller Unforgiven with Suranne Jones, British-American recording artist Emily Beecham has enjoyed a sizeable film career. Beecham’s most recent BBC appearances have been as Fanny, the title character in Emily Mortimer’s adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s comedy romance The Pursuit of Love, and as Catherine, Estella’s adoptive mother, in Cruella, a Disney prequel. She appeared in Hail, Caesar! as Dierdre, and will soon appear in Guy Ritchie’s The Interpreter and Kirsten Scott Thomas’ My Mother’s Wedding, which she will also direct. She portrays Maura Franklin, a doctor who travels on the Kerberos in 1899 and searches for her lost brother.

Andreas Pietschmann as Eyk Larsen
A well-known figure on German television since the 1990s, Andreas gained popularity in 2007 for his performance as Konny von Brendorp in the action-crime thriller GSG-9. He has played several characters in cinema, including Udo Kier’s co-star in the children’s fantasy series 4 Against Z and with Lars Mickelsen in the action film The Team. Fans of Dark will recognize him most for his role as The Stranger, an enigmatic figure whose entrance ignites the entire plot. He portrays ship captain Eyk in 1899, a heartbroken man who becomes suspicious of misconduct within the shipping company.

Aneurin Barnard as Daniel
Welsh actor Aneurin Barnard is known for his roles as the scheming Richard III in the Starz historical drama series The White Queen and Boris Drubotskoy in the most recent BBC rendition of Tolstoy’s War & Peace. He was previously rumored to be in the running for the lead role in Doctor Who. He recently appeared in the final season of the BBC gangster thriller Peaky Blinders and died prematurely in the first season of the BBC crime drama The Pact. He portrays the intriguing Daniel in 1899, a character who joins the crew when things start to get strange.

Rosalie Craig as Virginia Wilson
Rosalie Craig recently starred alongside Michelle Dockery and Sienna Miller in Netflix’s Anatomy of a Scandal, alongside Catherine Tate in The Nan Movie, and has appeared in countless supporting TV roles from Endeavor to Father Brown, Truth Seekers and more. She plays the worldly Mrs. Wilson, a wealthy woman who travels alone and seems to know everyone’s personal affairs. In As You Like It, a 2016 National Theater performance, the stage and screen actor played the title role.

Clara Rosager as Tove
With her role as Sarah in the dystopian series The Rain, Danish actor Clara Rosager is no stranger to the European genre of Netflix. Clara played Miss Sweden in the 2020 beauty pageant film Misbehavior. She also had an appearance as Jean in the Morbius comic book adaptation and most recently played Nadya in the Italian financial thriller Devils. She plays Tove, a pregnant Swedish passenger from a religious household who gets caught up in the crazy and sad events of 1899.

Lucas Lynggaard Tonnesen as Krester
Fans of the Danish political drama Borgen may recognize Lucas Lynggaard Tonnesen from season four, where he played the adult Magnus, son of Birgitte Nyborg, the main character. The Danish actor, who played Magnus in the Netflix dystopia The Rain, appeared alongside Clara Rosager. Lucas plays Krester in 1899, the brother of Tove (played by Clara). Krester is a haunted young Swedish man who endures the bigotry of his conservative parents.

Miguel Bernardeau as Angel
Miguel Bernardeau, a well-known actor in his native Spain, plays Angel in 1899, a wealthy Spanish gentleman traveling in first class with his priest brother Ramiro. The actor is most recognized for his work on the HBO Max co-production Todo Lo Otro and the critically acclaimed Spanish Netflix adolescent drama Elite as Guzman. Zorro’s latest TV series will soon feature him as the title character.

Anton Lesser as Henry Singleton
An established actor on both the big and small screen, Anton Lesser is perhaps best known for playing the evil maester Qyburn in Game of Thrones and for playing CSI Bright in the UK’s hit ITV crime thriller Endeavor . The Crown, Wolf Hall, and Dickensian are just a handful of movies and TV shows on his extensive resume. His role in 1899 was kept a secret until the episodes aired so that a major spoiler could be kept a secret.

Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen as Darrel and Lachlan
Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen, better known as the British comedy team The Pin, are comedians and actors who help break the ultra-serious tone with some old-fashioned bickering and wolf jokes. The Jurassic World: Dominion stars appear as a pair of engine room workers on the Kerberos, and they are an eccentric element to the 1899 cast.
