From Luna to Alfie and Teddy, MailOnline’s new interactive map reveals the most popular dog names in YOUR area

As scientists reveal the country’s most popular dog names, a new interactive map shows which are most popular in your region.

The map, based on data from more than 330,000 puppies, reveals the top three names in British cities including London, Bristol, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

The research found that Luna is the most popular name nationally, but other top choices include Bella, Milo, Poppy, Alfie, Teddy and Coco.

MailOnline’s interactive tool also allows you to search for the most popular names for your dog’s breed.

The research, which collected data from more than 330,000 dogs in the UK over the past 12 months, was conducted by pet care rewards app Biscuit.

β€œDog owners love the name Luna – in fact, one in 72 dogs adopts the name,” says Claire Greenyer, co-founder of Biscuit Pet Care.

‘New owners are advised to choose simple two-syllable names ending in a vowel so that their furry companion can recognize when they are called and Luna makes just the right choice in that regard.

β€œAnd the influence of popular culture should not be overlooked; Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter played a big role here.’

It seems the line between dog and human names is blurrier now, as many of the most popular choices are human Christian names, such as Poppy, Daisy, and Alfie.

Owners who want less common names should opt for names like Bruno, Ralph, Oscar and Dexter, the data shows, as they are among the least popular options.

Britain’s favorite dog names

  1. Luna (1.39% of British dogs)
  2. Bella (1.29%)
  3. Milo (1.09%)
  4. Lola (0.98%)
  5. Poppy (0.95%
  6. Teddy (0.91%)
  7. Friend (0.85%)
  8. Maximum (0.78%)
  9. Daisy (0.68%)
  10. Alfie (0.66%)

Greenyer even suggests using even more unique names, such as ‘Cornflakes’, ‘Goat’ and ‘Mozzarella’.

“These are some of the more unusual names Biscuit app users call their dogs,” she said.

The data shows that statistically, one in 72 dogs is named Luna, one in 78 Bella, and one in 92 Milo.

Milo was popularized by Milo, the Jack Russell Terrier in the 1994 film ‘The Mask’ starring Jim Carey.

Although Luna is the most popular dog name overall (of all breeds in Britain), the research reveals some interesting naming trends when looking at breeds individually.

For example, Luna is the top name for nine dog breeds, including the Labrador Retriever, Border Collie and Golden Retriever.

Second-placed ‘Bella’ is the top name of five dog breeds, including the Beagle, Bulldog and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Meanwhile, ‘Milo’ is the best choice for three dog breeds, including Jack Russell Terrier and Cocker Spaniel.

In Britain, ‘Luna’ is the most popular dog name for several breeds including Labrador Retriever and Border Collie, the results show. ‘Hugo’ is the top name for the French Bulldog, while ‘Milo’ is the top name for Cocker Spaniel, Jack Russell Terrier and Jack Russell Terrier Cross

And interestingly, the fourth-placed ‘Lola’ is the most popular option for small breeds – Chihuahua and Pug.

It was also found that the Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed in Britain, with 8.1 percent of British dogs being Labrador Retrievers.

This is followed by Cocker Spaniel (6.8 percent) Cockapoo (5.9 percent) Dachshund (3.8 percent), French Bulldog (3.2 percent) and Border Collie (2.8 percent).

The top 10 is completed by Staffordshire Bull Terrier (2.6 percent), Jack Russell Terrier (2.3 percent), Chihuahua (2.2 percent) and mixed breeds (2.2 percent).
